Yesterday our CEO Phillip Duffy visited Quorn in Leicestershire with Environment Secretary Steve Reed to see the impacts of recent flooding and meet with response staff.
Together, we are working to better protect communities across England.
I hear that this was a difficult visit as a result of some of locals having been flooded more than once in the past 12 to 18 months. It would be good to capture all the issues and gain an understanding on what support Recovery teams could receive from government going forward as it does not sit within incident response or BAU operations.
Where is the better protection and where is schedule 3 and sustainable drainage and where is the restrictions on flood plains ? For Gods sake please show some respect to natural systems rather than PR exercise!

By having a conversation that’s positive (on design and materials mitigating flood impacts) you move beyond “climate change is bad” discussions and allow people to listen, learn and share knowledge. They engage and start to see the problem less fatalistically.
This week PIA Victoria Vice President Jane Keddie MPIA represented PIA on ABC, setting out how planning can play a role in the management of flooding in a changing climate.
She highlighted the need for State investment in keeping Council flood modelling up to date. She also pointed to Queensland approaches to house and garden design and the use of flood resilient materials.

A Chartered Ecotist - massively celebrating the nature restoration achievements of others. Never a "specialist" but inspired by integrated catchment & landscape restoration
I've not seen the details in the $300bn deal made at COP. However, I know it's not going to be enough for a global problem.
I also know Tenbury Wells very well having worked in the Teme catchment for 9 years (and I used to drive this road almost every day for 4 years!).
The #river (the bit inside the banks at least) is a #SSSI and is associated with two Special Areas of #Conservation. The river is not in the condition it should be for #nature. And as can be seen by these horrific images, the #floodplain can be devastated by #flooding (yes, I know that's what floodplains are for, but the video link below highlights the speed of devastation).
The scheme mentioned in Heather's post won't necessarily increase benefits for the wider #ecosystem#services that natural #regeneration can bring, but natural regeneration will certainly benefit the settlements, communities, and infrastructure of the catchment, including benefitong the flood scheme by reducing peak flows.
#Integrated Catchment Approaches need #collaboration across sectors; a clear understanding of the risks to those sectors, #communities and nature; and a clear understanding of the opportunities that the multiple benefits of natural regeneration can bring for different parts of #society.
They can reduce #flood#risk if done in the right way, can restore nature, increase #water#quality, improve #agricultural yield, sequester #carbon, and increase #mental and #physical#wellbeing. The #economic benefits from natural regeneration across these services can be vast - we simply need to understand this, and implement.
I have enormous empathy for those impacted by flooding, and massive gratitude for organisations like the The National Flood Forum and their Flood Action Groups that work so hard to support people during such trauma. We can reduce those impacts if we collaborate

Thinking of Tenbury Wells who have a scheme approved but have waited years for it to happen,
Sth Wales & everyone else dealing with flooding from storm Bert.
Where is the big plan Government! Personal resilience is not enough.

This week in NYPIRG Executive Director Blair Horner's Capitol Perspective blog: Protecting New York's Wetlands
"The rationale for state protection of wetlands, which include swamps, marshes, bogs, fens, and wet clay meadows, is that these areas provide critical ecosystem services for communities across the state. Wetlands protect drinking water by naturally filtering out heavy metals, toxic contaminants, and other pollutants. Additionally, wetlands offer flood protection, with one million gallons of water being stored for every one acre of wetland, while also mitigating shoreline erosion."

As Southern California recovers from recent firestorms, last week Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to help protect communities from flooding and landslides.✨
Due to the debris and burn scars left by the firestorms, there are serious safety risks when it rains. The risk of mudslides, landslides, flash floods, and debris flows is increased with burn scars because they absorb water far more slowly than normal terrain. 💧⛰️🔥
The executive order temporarily suspends some environmental standards and approval processes for 90 days in order to address these threats and expedite emergency response activities. Among these initiatives are the stabilization of hillsides and the removal of debris from waterways.
