Sometimes as an #ESG specialist it is good to pause, remind ourselves of the science and hopefully without becoming too despondent, reconnect with why we are doing... what we are doing. We recommend a survey incorporating feedback from scientist members of the Intergovernmental Panel on #ClimateChange (IPCC) published yesterday by UK newspaper, The Guardian. Pause, and take a moment to read. https://lnkd.in/dwiymEZU #DamianCarrington, Environmental Editor at The Guardian. #Sustainability

Sustainability reporting confusion? This UN Environment Programme report provides an overview of the methodological and conceptual trends and differences among the private sector assessment and disclosure approaches on nature-related issues. It provides comparative research on seven leading standards, including: • #CDP disclosure system • European Sustainability Reporting Standards (#ESRS) • Global Reporting Initiative (#GRI) Standards • International Sustainability Standards Board (#ISSB) Standards • Natural Capital Protocol • Science Based Targets Network (#SBTN) target setting guidance •Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (#TNFD) framework These approaches vary in their specific purpose, which includes disclosure, assessment and/or target setting, and so does their content. This report aims to highlight the common trends while noting divergences that relate to the differing purposes. The landscape of private sector assessment and disclosure on nature will continue to evolve. As all approaches have plans for future updates, specific recommendations or requirements of the different approaches may change. The transition from voluntary to mandatory disclosure requirements is likely to continue and be observed in an increasing number of countries. UNEP FI and UNEP-WCMC intend to continue developing future research comparing the reviewed approaches to understand further the progress on the trends highlighted in this report and the challenges in strengthening the approaches and their alignment. https://lnkd.in/eS8Wet2x #sustainability #disclosures #reporting

🇪🇺New ERA’s EU Journal # 1 - Mid-term review of the 8th EAP On June 17, the Council unanimously adopted the conclusions of the mid-term review of the 8th Environment Action Programme (EAP), a legally agreed common agenda that entered into force in May 2022 and that guides European environmental policy until 2030. The representatives of the 27 Member States gathered to assess the progress made in relation to the objectives set out in the text and thus inform future legislative priorities in terms of climate and the environment. At this stage, no additional measures are expected and the focus is set mainly on the implementation of existing measures, putting the responsibility on Member States, which are now required to take action and deliver on their commitments. However, a list of necessities for the next term was set, covering themes like water management, climate resilience, biodiversity loss, adaptation and just transition. Circular economy and sustainable resource management have also been targeted as key tools. The review not only recognises that a transition to a circular economy would reduce climate, resource, and ecosystem pressures, but that it would also benefit economic and industrial acceleration, innovation, employment, and EU self-sufficiency in critical raw materials. The Council has highlighted the importance of taking further steps in the short term to ensure a smooth implementation of current legislation, specifically focusing on the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The Commission has to respond to these conclusions by March 2025. This clearly indicates that ecological transition must continue to be a central focus of European cooperation beyond the Green Deal. While initial progress has been made, it is crucial that we remain steadfast in our commitment to this objective 💪 #NewERA #EU #GreenDeal #CircularEconomy #Reuse #Refill #EUElections #News

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a crucial tool in the modern approach to sustainable development and environmental protection. This systematic process evaluates the potential environmental consequences of proposed projects or developments before they are implemented. The scope of EIA extends far beyond just ecological concerns. It takes a holistic approach, considering the intricate web of relationships between environmental, socio-economic, cultural, and human health factors. This comprehensive analysis recognises that environmental changes can have far-reaching impacts on communities, economies, and public health. For instance, a proposed industrial development might not only affect local wildlife and vegetation but also influence air and water quality, potentially impacting human health and traditional livelihoods in the area. The EIA process typically involves several stages, including screening to determine if an assessment is necessary, scoping to define the extent of the assessment, impact prediction and evaluation, development of mitigation measures, and monitoring plans. It often culminates in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), a comprehensive document that outlines the findings and recommendations of the assessment. #EIA #SustainableDevelopment #EnvironmentalProtection #ResponsiblePlanning #EcologicalAssessment #Sustainability #SustainableBusiness #ESG #ESGinActionAfrica

Understanding Environmental Impact Assessment - A Crucial Step towards Sustainable Development. Introduction: As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainable development, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has become an essential tool for identifying and mitigating the potential environmental consequences of human activities. In this blog post, we as Environmental community will delve into the world of EIA, exploring its importance, process, and benefits. What is Environmental Impact Assessment? EIA is a systematic process used to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of a proposed project, policy, or program. It aims to identify and assess the potential effects on the environment, including air, water, soil, flora, fauna, and human health. Importance of EIA: EIA plays a vital role in ensuring that development projects are environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. By identifying potential environmental impacts, EIA helps: - Prevent environmental degradation - Protect biodiversity - Promote sustainable development - Ensure compliance with environmental regulations EIA Process: The EIA process typically involves the following stages: 1. Screening: Determining whether an EIA is required 2. Scoping: Identifying the scope and boundaries of the assessment 3. Impact prediction: Identifying potential environmental impacts 4. Mitigation and management: Developing strategies to minimize impacts 5. Monitoring and review: Ensuring compliance and effectiveness Benefits of EIA: - Informed decision-making - Environmental protection - Cost savings - Enhanced public participation - Improved project design and planning Conclusion: EIA is a critical tool for achieving sustainable development and environmental protection. By understanding the EIA process and its benefits, we can work towards creating a more sustainable future for generations to come. #EnvironmentalImpactAssessment #SustainableDevelopment #EIA #EnvironmentalProtection #Sustainability
