EDS has today released a case study on the Marlborough Sounds as part of its broader oceans reform project. The Marlborough Sounds is an iconic and unique marine area with an intricate web of marine inlets and islands that contain a wide diversity of marine life. But the area is under immense environmental pressure from stressors including high levels of sedimentation, damage to seabed habitats from bottom trawling and dredging, over-harvesting of fish stocks and climate change. Reversing this long-term degradation will require a concerted and integrated effort which includes passive marine restoration, active marine restoration and land-based efforts. EDS’s case study identifies some ways in which this might be achieved. This is outlined in the full media release available via the link below: https://lnkd.in/eb297bvM

Save our Marlborough Sounds. The Marlborough Sounds is an iconic and unique marine system, which has a long and fascinating history of Māori and European occupation, and is suffering severe and ongoing degradation. Key stressors are high levels of sedimentation, damage to seabed habitats from bottom trawling and dredging, over-harvesting of fish stocks and climate change. Reversing this long-term degradation will require a concerted and integrated effort which includes passive marine restoration, active marine restoration and land-based efforts. All users of the Sounds will need to play their part, in a combined effort, if the current situation is to be turned around. This report, which is part of EDS’s wider oceans reform project, seeks to identify some ways in which this might be achieved. https://lnkd.in/gnadB6fi

The country’s first Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) has been launched today in the west of England. LNRSs are new spatial plans, mandated under the Environment Act, that are intended to aid decision-making when it comes to determining which areas within a particular authority area should be prioritised for ecological recovery and net gain mitigation.
