The EU’s new #Methane Regulation is a wake-up call for banks financing oil & gas: methane is 80x more powerful in warming our planet than CO2 in the short term, making it a serious climate threat. Ignoring this issue doesn’t just harm the planet - banks tied to high methane emissions face significant reputational risk if they don’t act now.   Our Director of Sustainable Finance, Nicki Harrison spoke to Börsen-Zeitung about why banks are now well advised to start reporting on their methane footprint. NEWS: Methane concentrations are rising faster than ever. The 2024 Global Methane Budget shows methane emissions caused by human activity are rising rapidly, accelerating #GlobalWarming every day. The report finds: 1️⃣ Human activities are responsible for at least two-thirds of global methane emissions, with fossil fuel operations contributing 34%. 2️⃣ The atmospheric concentration of methane reached 1,923 parts per billion in 2023—2.6x higher than pre-industrial levels, and the highest in 800,000 years. 3️⃣ If current trends continue, we risk missing the targets of the Global Methane Pledge. 🔍 We know the options to #CutMethane are cost-effective, and technology exists to achieve a 75% reduction by 2030.
