Just in case you missed it when it was first released, I wanted to post a reminder of the new guidance document from Natural Climate Solutions Alliance and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. It’s a guide to help investors and financial institutions navigate the at times confusing world of natural climate solutions. At 102 pages, it’s certainly not light reading, but this guidance is, nonetheless, incredibly useful. At a time when we face a significant funding gap to nature, I’m all for any guidance that helps simplify and clarify the investment process. We know that implementing successful mitigation projects that foster sustainable development is a matter of teamwork 🤝 . And in the global landscape of the voluntary carbon market, the host countries of mitigation projects have a crucial role in this team. Together with Nicolas Kreibich, Florian Eickhold and Leonie M., we spoke with government representatives of host countries to explore the risks, benefits, challenges and the speciality of the national context when engaging in the VCM. The findings are out now.
🔊 NEW ::: VCM Host Country Perspective – Addressing risks and securing benefits of engaging on the voluntary carbon market ::: New Policy Paper released! The Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) can be an important tool for leveraging private capital to fund climate action, but its complex landscape is hard to navigate. Employing a multi-method approach that combines desktop research with insights from interviews and roundtable discussions, our new paper explores the challenges, risks, and benefits related to the VCM. It puts a particular focus on assisting governments, especially in developing countries, in their decision-making processes, highlighting the imperative for governance tailored to the unique national contexts. The findings suggest that increased transparency and collaboration among stakeholders, an improved balance between government interventions and industry-led initiatives, and financial and technical support from developed countries are needed. JOIN US: Hidden handbrakes: an Open Space conversation --> https://lnkd.in/ejkf-K2a Action to halt or reduce further climate change is being blocked by a range of ‘hidden handbrakes’ that the public are broadly unaware of. These range from legal obstacles to subsidies for fossil fuel companies and the architecture of the global financial system. With funding from The Generation Foundation, we launched the hidden handbrakes campaign at London Climate Action Week in 2023. In the last year we have gathered examples and research about blockers to climate action and social justice, generating press coverage to expose these hidden handbrakes. This London Climate Action Week event on 25 June will explore particular hidden handbrakes and discuss ways to release them, expose them to wider scrutiny, and discuss ways the world can continue to address them - with an IIED expert researcher and communications expert in the room with them on each topic. Join us for this interactive session where we'll converse, collaborate, and continue to expose the entrenched blockers to climate action.
