Building performance standards are state- and local-level policies that establish progressively higher decarbonization targets for existing structures, and they work hand-in-hand with regularly updated building codes to minimize building sector emissions. Washington became the first state to adopt a building performance standard with the passage of the Clean Buildings Act in May 2019. Climate change.. designers are trained to considers climate change for 50 years in their professional education. With the evidence of damage to the roofs and rainwater ingress nowadays, I have serious doubt in this. S84(1) in UBBL 1984 stipulates that suitable measures shall be make to prevent water ingress. In the 60s, rainwater dripped vertically. Nowadays, rainwater spalshes diagonally due to stronger wind. So, was what suitable in the 80s is suitable nowadays? This can be evidenced in rainwater splashing in the lobbies and carpark that are designed to be open without waterproofing protection. Furthermore, the pressure to bring down the costs, make more profits and expedite the construction duration exacerbates the situation. An architect who told the audiences in a seminar that if climate change was not mentioned in the contract, they did not need to bother climate change. This really pissed me off and I started to criticize him with nasty words, ended up I was banned by the organizer. Hahahaaa, honesty is not the best policy nowadays... Well, case laws say that residential building must be designed and constructed for due fitness for habitation. If climate change is ignored and the consequential cracks and leakage take place, it is apparently a NEGLIGENCE. Building managers have to face these consequences. In view of the responsibilities to stipulated in s85 of Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 and S21 of Strata Management Act 2013, building owners shall maintain the buildings in good, safe and serviceable condition. Currently attending the NZGBC Green Property Summit and thoroughly enjoying the insightful exchanges with industry experts across the building and construction sector. However, during a panel on Embodied Carbon, a comment was made that “using low carbon concrete” would “likely get you 3 to maybe 4%” reductions in embodied carbon. This strikes me as an instance where simplified rhetoric is creeping into a discussion that should be firmly grounded in #facts. If we achieve a 40% reduction in the embodied carbon of concrete, then the impact on the concrete component will indeed be 40%—not less. The overall impact within the context of a whole building will, of course, vary. And perhaps the original statement holds true for a specific scenario. But I can assure you that achieving these “3 to maybe 4%” (or 40% for the concrete component) will come at a significantly lower marginal cost compared to other carbon reduction measures. Diminishing this achievement does little to encourage a constructive and informed debate. #sustainability #lowcarbonconcrete
