How do we ensure the future wellbeing of land and people in Aotearoa New Zealand? That is the question we put to New Zealanders last year. We used the feedback we received after two rounds of consultation to create a vision of what land, and our relationship to it, could look like in 2050. The people we engaged with envisaged a future where: ▪️tangata whenua are empowered to exercise kaitiakitanga in a more meaningful way ▪️we have protected, revitalised and made the land more resilient ▪️we are a less growth-oriented society and have a smaller ecological footprint ▪️people have a deeper connection with the environment and live more sustainable lives ▪️an intergenerational perspective is embedded in decision-making across society. We have set out this vision in our Long-term Insights Briefing 2023, which explores options for improving how we use, manage and care for land. Government agencies are required to produce a long-term insights briefing every three years to support discussion and decision-making on the big issues facing Aotearoa.
