Enviva continued its support of the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation (CHPP) as one of the sponsors of the organization’s 9th Annual South Carolina Rural & Limited Resource Landowner Symposium held recently in West Columbia. Keynote speaker Shirley Sherrod, President and CEO of the Sherrod Institute, started the two-day conference off to an inspiring start by encouraging the audience to be persistent, diligent and patient when seeking change by retelling her own experiences. Other topics included succession planning, marketing timber, timber tax policy, entrepreneurship, and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs available to landowners. Enviva appreciated the opportunity to exhibit at the CHPP conference. Congrats to Dr. Jennie Stephens, CEO of CHPP, and her staff for another fantastic workshop that drew over 180 in-person participants and even more online. #EnvivaProud

Meet our LEAD Maryland Class XIII Fellow! Today's spotlight is on Darryl Glotfelty. Darryl is co-owner of Meadow Mountain Hemp and Meadow Mountain Microgreens & Edible Flowers. Q: In what ways do you see yourself fostering collaboration and innovation within your industry or community, especially in light of the new issues you've encountered? A: "One of the main takeaways from my LEAD experience thus far is the importance of land preservation and use. Whether we are talking about the equestrian industry, solar and data centers, or management of our state forests, the way we preserve and utilize land can be unique and varied. One idea that was triggered by our three seminars was the possibility of collaboration with solar firms to introduce and research agrivoltaics with industrial fiber hemp. This would not only increase revenue generated per acre, but could also provide hundreds of acres of fiber hemp necessary to feed an industrial hemp processing plant. Ideally, 1500-2000 acres of fiber hemp per year would be grown to provide enough output to sustainably run a small/medium size hemp processing facility. Growing hemp on previously mined grounds could bolster land restoration efforts in Appalachia, while also providing an economically viable crop if proper infrastructure is in place for processing. Figuring out ways to concurrently promote the growth of a new crop, while also knowing processing capacity is limited, makes this a difficult task. I plan to continue to advocate for innovative ways to make this vision come to fruition."
