Following a two-year exploration of renewable energy solutions, Crown Research Institute Scion has released a statement highlighting the potential of short-rotation forestry (SRF) to significantly reduce New Zealand’s current reliance on fossil fuels – in particular, coal. SRF involves cultivating fast-growing tree species that can be harvested within a relatively short period, typically three to fifteen years, to produce substantial amounts of biomass quickly for the emerging bioenergy market. NZDFI Advances durable eucalypt forestry and biomass industry for Marlborough: A new forestry and wood processing supply chain could improve long-term sustainability and resilience for Marlborough’s wine industry and generate new investment and employment. This was the subject of a recent workshop led by New Zealand Dryland Forests Innovation (NZDFI). Texas A&M Forest Service is awarding $8.25 million through the Texas Climate-Smart Initiative, a financial incentives program to fund non-industrial, private, small-acreage landowners. The five-year project will provide financial incentives to agricultural commodities across Texas. The Texas Climate-Smart Initiative program incentivizes farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or sequester carbon beyond normal practices. For forestry, the program aims to maximize carbon sequestration while simultaneously producing high-quality fiber for the timber industry. Landowners interested in conducting science-based, carbon-focused forest management practices may apply for funds for one of five forestry practice categories, including stand establishment, forest fertilization, herbicide application, prescribed burning and forest thinning. On 1 February 2024, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) published Government Notice 4296, announcing the extension date for an amendment to the Transitional Arrangements within the Financial Provision Regulations, 2015 (GNR 1147).   In essence, mining and prospecting rights that were applied for prior to November 2015 are proposed to be obligated to adhere to the Financial Provision Regulations, 2015 (GNR 1147). The specific compliance deadline is yet to be determined by the DFFE.   It is important to note that mining and prospecting rights granted on or after 20 November 2015 are subject to these regulations, and compliance with these remains mandatory for all recent mining and prospecting right applications.   Please do not hesitate to contact info@envass.co.za for support with Closure Cost Assessment (CCA’s), Quantity Updates, Internal training, or Financial provision determination as mandated by the Environmental Authorisation and Mining Rights application processes.
