Uncovering the hidden costs of medical waste! Did you know that improper disposal of medical waste not only harms the ecosystem, but also significantly drives up costs for health systems? 💸 A staggering amount of general, nonhazardous hospital waste is incorrectly discarded as hazardous, leading to unnecessary and expensive processing. At St. Joseph’s Health Centre, an audit revealed that up to 90% of items in "sharps" containers were inappropriately disposed of, causing skyrocketing costs. Proper segregation could save hospitals upwards of $100,000 annually! Envomed's innovative solutions help streamline waste management, ensuring proper disposal and substantial cost savings. Let’s embrace smarter, sustainable practices to cut costs and protect our planet. 👉Find out more about how Envomed applies this innovative solution: https://lnkd.in/eZf7GnpJ 👇Check out the full report in the link from the first comment! #Envomed

Waste vs. Profit in Orthopaedics…is it unsustainable? Where do you stand???? The healthcare sector is responsible for more than 4% of international greenhouse gases. This makes our sector the fifth largest polluter in the world. 😳😱 #meddevice #medtech #leanandgreen #medicaldeviceregulation Great paper here discussing the difficulties and #challenges about where the responsibility lies between #patientsafety, #SingleUseDevices (SUDs) and #medicalwaste. We all use SUDs daily in ALL areas of #medicine from gloves to syringes to scalpel blades to instruments for specific surgeries. They all get thrown away. It’s *offensive* and justified by some as infection prevention and by others as “more profit with SUDs so why would we make a reusable instrument?” (Actual quote!) The #nhs has pledged to achieve #netzerocarbon by 2040 (with an interim goal for 80% reduction by 2028-2032), making it the first national health system with this commitment. This is wildly optimistic but good on them and #nhsengland should be applauded for this. It’s a start! US hospitals generate over 5 million tons of waste per year. This volume is enough to fill a string of tractor-trailers stretching from Los Angeles to New York City. (Source: Waste360). Initiatives like The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 15% of waste generated by healthcare activities is considered hazardous, potentially infectious, toxic, or radioactive. Clearly that needs specific waste management. (Source: WHO) Waste management and environmental considerations in healthcare are often a greater challenge in developing nations, where resources and proper infrastructure might be limited. Studies comparing single-use vs. reusable instruments mostly favour reusables, but often only after the reusable item has undergone many cycles (e.g. 25 in one paper) to offset its sterilisation energy requirements. Special mention to KARL STORZ whose sustainability credentials and minimal use of SUDs is a beacon of corporate hope. Laura Bellaire BRITTANY N GARCIA - great paper!!! Thank you.

Management of solid medical waste and liquid medical waste is a problem that has not yet been resolved, especially in primary health care facilities located in remote areas, with limited access to funds and electricity facilities. Increasing the competency of health workers regarding medical waste management is not enough. There needs to be the development of appropriate technology that is affordable and meets quality requirements.
