We've detected more cyano-harmful algal blooms locally than ever before. These type of blooms have the potential to produce toxins that damage livers or nervous systems of people, pets, or livestock. As we enter into a fun holiday weekend, we want to remind people to stay safe! Always wear your lifejacket when paddling, and before you start your water recreation adventures check for reports of harmful algal blooms. It might be a CyanoHAB bloom in surface water if you see: -Strongly colored water (blue-green, green, yellow, white, brown, purple, or red). -Paint-like appearance. -Floating mats or scums. People, pets, and livestock should avoid contact (this includes fishing, paddling, and swimming) with any floating mats, scums, or discolored water. "The Successful Aquacultural Practice Catfish Series" Day 14 Topic: Pond Cleaning Pond cleaning is very important I would want us to perceive pond cleaning as doing dishes. However frequently you decide to clean your pond will determine the health status of your fishes. One of the best time one can decide to clean a pond is during the sorting period. It is obvious that sorting is carried out multiple times during the production, sometimes up to four times during the production. so that is you have an opportunity to wash your ponds four times during the production. Selecting a specific date for washing of the pond can also be effective for example washing your pond once in every month that also can be effective. Here are the following reasons why you need to clean your pond: •You need to clean your pond to get rid of the accumulated ammonia •Should in case you're using an outdoor pond, you need to clean your pond to reduce the amount of algae, this algae compete with the fishes for oxygen •Ensure an enabling and healthy environment for the fishes •To disinfect the pond. To wash your ponds you need the following basics such as: Brush, sponge, bowl, e.t.c Soap can be used in washing the pond but it should be added in minute quantity and the pond must be flushed continuously before the fishes are introduced, or probably you can leave the pond for a while so that the effect of the soap will reduce The soap serve as a disinfectant, other disinfectant can also be used after washing (chlorine, formalin, salt). When chlorine and formalin are used it is strongly adviced that the pond be abandoned for a couple of days to ensure the chemicals wear off. Advantages of pond cleaning: •Reduce stress •The fishes are happy •The fishes feed well •The water quality (dissolved oxygen) does not get used up faster •The fishes are not at risk of contracting diseases. It's animal welfare, not just because healthy, happy animals produce more high-quality wholesome products, but because it's the right thing to do for our animals & for you. It's being involved in our community. It's mentoring youth. It's talking with the public. It's being good neighbors. It's about being a good person. It's combing environmental stewardship, food safety, animal welfare, & community to create a viable business. So we can invest back into our farm & provide wholesome food into the future. What does it look like? Sustainability does not just look one way. Every farm has a different approach to sustainability with what works for their farm. It can look like: 💚Feeding byproduct feeds to cows to reduce food waste. (Ex. Soybean meal, dries distillers grains, almond hulls, bakery waste, ugly veggies, etc.) 💚Recycling ♻️ water to help cool milk, drinking water for cows, flushing barns, & to provide nutrient-dense irrigation for crops 🌾 💚Our compost-bedded pack, which is made primarily of sawdust recycled ♻️ from furniture manufacturing. It's comfy for our cows & composts so we can fertilize our fields & improve the soil health & crop/pasture quality. 💚Our intensive-rotational grazing system, which provides high-quality forage for our cows & improves soil health.
