What is the right thermostat temperature setting? When Micah Pollak, an economist at Indiana University, shared his preferred thermostat setting of 77-78°F on social media, he sparked widespread debate, with many labeling his family as "monsters" for their high setting. This aligns with the Environmental Protection Agency’s suggestions to save energy by setting thermostats higher in summer. Although some people find these recommendations impractical, especially for sleeping at 82°F, the practice can significantly reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills. The EPA estimates a 6% savings on cooling costs for every degree the thermostat is raised. While these guidelines are based on an older 2009 document and are not official mandates, they illustrate how adjusting the thermostat can contribute to energy efficiency. Experts in thermal comfort highlight that individual comfort varies based on metabolism and environmental factors, and they suggest using fans and wearing lightweight clothing to stay cool. Interesting read on Air Conditioning. Being more aware of smarter cooling tactics could save us money and avoid more greenhouse gas impacts. Really considering installing a whole house fan after reading this. Homes out west should be required to have whole house fans installed and people educated on these tactics more often. Apparently it’s only getting warmer.

This has been such tricky news to read about at the same time as we're realizing at the bottom of the #SafeSystemsPyramid the most impactful strategies require efforts such as congestion pricing that work at the population scale and fundamentally address exposure. Reducing VMT is a safety strategy. Distinguishing between roads for movement and roads for place is a critical aspect of our #SafeSystem pivot, but it will be challenging to do this in the US with our land use patterns and our complicated politics.

If you're setting your thermostat to 72°, you're likely wasting energy. The EPA recommends keeping your thermostat at 78º and ASHRAE recommends 76°F when you are home during the day. For every degree warmer you set your AC, you can save up to 6% on cooling costs. Your body will adjust in just a couple of weeks, especially if you use fans and wear lightweight clothing. On November 14, the EC published an overview of 171 new projects under the LIFE Programme for environment and climate action (submitted under the 2022 LIFE call for which more than 751 applications were handed in). Approved projects cover a wide range of topics: nature and biodiversity, circular economy and quality of life, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and clean energy transition. Under EU State aid rule, the European Commission has greenlit a €4 billion German initiative designed to assist the country's industrial sector in slashing greenhouse gas emissions during production processes.   Operating through 'Climate Protection Contracts', the scheme offers variable annual grants over a 15-year period, and ensures the measure only covers the additional costs linked to the new production processes. This decision is particularly interesting as we as consumers do not have any power to influence this massive source of greenhouse gas emissions where China's SF6 emissions alone represent a mind boggling 0.2% of total GHG emissions (according to this report https://lnkd.in/dKtQxsSS ) It is a good example of effective climate policies that need political support.

The European Commission has just released its evaluation of the draft National Energy and Climate Plans (#NECPs). The assessment shows that more efforts are needed to achieve the EU's climate targets, including reducing #GHG emissions 💭 by at least 55% by 2030 . Currently, the measures in place would only lead to a reduction of 51%. The draft NECPs fall short of achieving the 42.5% #renewable target 🌻 and the 11.7% #energyefficiency goal.
