Another Budget 2025 engagement session today, this time with several civil service organisations, think tanks, academia and some of our GLICs on addressing issues around an aging society. This is a topic close to many hearts, as we become an increasingly aging nation.
We listened to similar threads around the need for targeted and preventive healthcare; better social protection; increasing labour market participation for seniors; retirement income literacy and longevity protection of retirement savings; help for caregivers; also mobility and transportation. Certainly many areas that need to be considered holistically.
In my wrap up after listening to all the attendees, I spoke about the need to address the issue of an aging society as a collective. The government’s fiscal space remains a challenge, which we are addressing through the implementation of economic reforms. In the meantime, we must work in partnership to solve issues related to a greying population.
EPF Malaysia is already working on Advancing an Aging Society as a key focus area under #GEARuP. Some of our other GLICs are also ready to step in to invest in developments that support this agenda, provided there are reasonable returns on the horizon. Additionally, communities must also be engaged so they are vested in making an impact on building better lives, not only for aging Malaysians, but also for their families and society as a whole.
Many takeaways for the Ministry of Finance Malaysia to consider for the budget in this area. Simple blanket policies are not the answer. Measures must be targeted to ensure we can bring about better, long-term solutions to grow old as a nation with grace, health and dignity.
