Entertainment Executive | Music Tech & AI | Streaming & DSPs | Artist & Label Relations | Recorded Music & Publishing
The first version of MIDI in the 1980s was quite rudimentary. In other works, it sounded bad. If you pulled up a "MIDI trumpet" it sounded like a poor two-bit imitation of a trumpet. A MIDI piano sounded like a child's toy. MIDI drums sounded like a cross between banging on wet cardboard and glass breaking (see: the Phil Collins catalog.) But the tech got better, and after a few years MIDI sounded as good as a recorded audio file. But something interesting happened along the way. A generation of musicians grew up hearing those early MIDI sounds and were influenced by them. They became their own aesthetic. If you listen to 90s hip hop or early 2000s indie rock, you can hear the influences of those early Roland or Alesis keyboard patches. Dr. Dre & MGMT certainly had more acoustically representative sounds available to them. But they wanted what they heard in their formative years. I mention all this because Gen AI music has this "sound." The vocals are wobbly. The instrumentation is messy and without definition. The quantization is all off. I kind of hate it. But in ten years, will recording artists be intentionally making music like this? 🤔 #musicindustry #musicbusiness #musicrecording #musictech

Another TOP TIP FOR MIXING! - BALANCE LEVELS... "Balance Levels" in audio mixing means setting each track’s volume so they blend well together, creating a cohesive, polished sound. Proper balancing ensures that no single element—like vocals, drums, or guitars—overpowers others, allowing each part to sit naturally within the mix. For example, vocals are usually prominent in pop songs, while bass and drums may be more balanced in the background to support the rhythm. By adjusting each track's level in relation to others, you maintain clarity and avoid clashing frequencies, ultimately creating a mix that sounds professional and enjoyable across different listening environments. #MusicProduction #MusicProductionTips #MusicTips
