Dear Medical Sales Recruiters, As a prospective applicant, I would like to share with you a recent story of how I am embodying the common Med Device Maxim of "Do the Job to Get the Job." Recently, I had the honor of attending a cadaver lab at The Ohio State University while shadowing one of the top companies within the medical device orthopedics space. This opportunity became available to me after networking on LinkedIn, making a connection, and accepting the invitation from one of the team's representatives who generously extended the invitation. After spending the day with the team and not just showing up early but exuding a helpful curiosity and blending in like a chameleon, the team took a liking to me and extended an invitation to remain in contact as future opportunities naturally surface. Seed planted. Within the Medical Device Industry, I can only imagine that you do not always "close the deal" on your first encounter. Similarly, I was not offered a position on the spot during my first meetup with this company. However, the eventual big deal, new account, or territory expansion is a manifestation of months, and sometimes years, of developing, growing, and maintaining relationships. Fruit to harvest. So, although today I continue my search for the job of my dreams, an opportunity to "Make an Impact Through Action," a CHANCE to provide value; my medical device journey has already begun. I have seeds to tend and a vast field of "Relationships" to sow. The job has already started, and one day when I finally land a position with the right lucky company, it will be time to reap the fruits of my labor. Or maybe I'll start tilling land and raising cattle! Turns out the medical device industry has a lot more in common with farmers than I initially realized. How do you stand out in an interview? When I was first interviewing for associate roles a decade ago, I had 1.5yrs of hardcore sales experience, a college athlete background, big smile, fresh haircuts, pressed suits, “charisma”. Yet I still was receiving rejection after rejection. That’s because those things are cool, but to really stand out more than anything, you have to ask the most detailed and thought-provoking questions. This is more memorable. This translates well into being a device rep. Asking a Dr. questions about their family and interests is a nice thing to do, but they won’t remember you by that. They’ll remember the rep who asked them an incredible question that made them think. There are no shortcuts to creating these questions. You have to study more than anyone else and/or talk to more reps at that company than anyone else. Dont forget to get all your research and questions printed out with an extra copy for anyone you speak to. Good luck!
