"Go slow to go fast" Today marks a significant milestone for me as I return from a three-year maternity leave. It's a moment filled with excitement, gratitude, and a touch of nervous energy. Still, I'm incredibly fortunate to be rejoining the incredible team at the Riigi Tugiteenuste Keskus / State Shared Service Centre, surrounded by kindness and support. Reflecting on this transition, there is so much truth in the phrase "go slow to go fast." As tempting as it may be to dive headfirst into my work, I'm reminding myself of the importance of pacing myself, prioritizing, and managing my own expectations. 💡 One study conducted here in Estonia revealed that only 37% of parents returning from parental leave felt they could successfully balance work and parenthood. Was this surprising? Not much, but it still highlights the real challenges many face. My commitment, both to myself and as a leader, is to be within that percentage or even strive to set it higher. I'm grateful to work in an organization that values flexible working opportunities, promotes hybrid collaboration, and prioritizes supporting mental health and work-life balance. Happy International Women's Day! Zulu Pods was co-founded by Daniella Sladen, a Latina aerospace engineer. When setting up the company, one of the key issues she wanted to address was paid family leave. Daniella and the management team created a policy of 18 weeks of paid parental leave. That is significantly more than any other U.S. aerospace company that we know of. It stems from Daniella’s own experience of working in aerospace and struggling to find a good life/work balance after having a baby. The Zulu Pods parental leave policy includes 2 weeks pre-birth leave, 14 weeks post-birth leave, and 2 weeks of a flexible transition back to work. Daniella said, “I want our employees to have time after birth or adoption, but also before. You have to build things, build the crib, paint, set up the nursery, maybe take a birthing class. It's a big life change. We also wanted to make it easier to transition back to work, so we added two weeks of flexible time for when a parent returns to work. You can't just jump from being a new parent and then jump back into 100% work mode. You need time to get used to your new routine. Those first couple of weeks back at work, you're going to forget something. You're going to forget the milk bag or a change of clothes. Time to embark on a 3 month secondment as CNO (Chief Nappy Officer) working closely with this wee man! I’m really fortunate to have the opportunity to take on this role thanks to a generous parental leave policy at my company but I know this isn’t the case for everyone. Last time I checked, it takes two to tango, so why do we expect one parent to do most of the heavy lifting?! More equal sharing of parental duties makes so much sense: 👶 Better parent-baby bonding. 👶 Greater appreciation for how bloody hard it is to look after a small bundle of human, 24/7. 👶 And ultimately, it’s better for the workplace. Primary carers (predominantly women) can return to work earlier (if they so choose) continuing their careers and supporting a more equal workforce. So here’s to a change of scenery for a little while - swapping meeting rooms for baby changing rooms. Teams groups for play groups. Climate report reading for bottle feeding. Parental leave is a man's job. It's nice to see that emancipation has now also reached the stronger sex. 😉 Our Head of Corporate Sales has gone on parental leave for the first of two months. Even though the CretschmarCargo Süd team cannot and would not want to do without Andre Petri, this step immediately received my full approval. Being able to spend every day with your child is invaluable. Fathers in particular often have to cope with a deficit here, which is that they put their job before their family. That is too short-sighted. It is the family that is by our side, even in times of change. (This is a family man speaking). Children give us happiness and life satisfaction. They ground us and help us to forget stress. They provide an important balance to professional life. But above all: they need their father! Despite the hurdles, many women have successfully navigated this path, bringing valuable perspectives and resilience to the workplace. This write-up explores some challenges as well as the strategies that have helped overcome them. 1. Work-Life Balance: I felt completely out of place when I resumed work from maternity leave. Being away from my baby felt like I had lost an item and needed to find it for immediate ease. But Aylin wasn't alone; she brought along the newest addition to her family, baby Ruby, making the visit all the more special. 🍼 A joyful reunion Aylin's visit was not just a casual catch-up; it marked a significant step in her journey of returning to work.
