Optimizing Manufacturing Throughput with Closed Loop Planning & Execution The most important KPI in manufacturing is throughput. Throughput refers to the rate at which a company's manufacturing process produces “Immediately salable” finished goods while using existing asset and resources. Throughput is a critical performance indicator for manufacturing operations, as it directly maximizes the company's ability to meet customer demand and generate revenue. To improve manufacturing throughput, companies should focus on reducing production lead time by optimizing the flow of materials around bottlenecks resources. This requires advanced planning and scheduling solution capable of identifying bottlenecks, optimizing their schedule, maximizing their productivity and synchronizing the production flows upstream and downstream according to bottleneck schedules. It is unfortunate there is a huge misunderstanding in the market that MES, which focuses only in execution, can optimize manufacturing performance through the measurement of OEE or through order tracking and tracing. That is why most MES programs don’t yield into value realization as they can only record poor performance without being able to optimize future throughput. Often, there is a confusion between throughput and productivity. Indeed, most of MES contribute perhaps to optimize OEE or machine productivity but this is not necessary an important KPI as it is different from throughput and might even degrades the performance creating WIP and an overall desynchronization of material flow. Which always lead to higher inventory, poor customer service and complete lack of responsiveness and much longer lead times. However, it is important to note that while increasing throughput is a key goal for many manufacturing companies, it must be balanced with other operational considerations, such as quality control, equipment maintenance, and workforce management. A narrow focus on throughput improvement without considering these other factors can lead to suboptimal outcomes, such as increased defect rates, higher maintenance costs, and employee burnout. My key recommendation is to engage a complete closed loop solutions of manufacturing planning and execution (APS & MES) in order to optimize throughput and to balance with other operational considerations like quality control, proactive or predictive maintenance and workforce optimization. #throughput #closedloopmanufacturing #supplychainmanagement

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗢𝗜 𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 (𝗠𝗘𝗦) ? Investing in a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) can be a game-changer for your production processes, but how do you measure its return on investment (ROI)? Here’s a simple guide to help you calculate the ROI of your MES and ensure you’re getting the most out of your investment. 1. 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀: • 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Measure the increase in production output and reduction in cycle times. • 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Track the reduction in defect rates and rework costs. • 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Calculate the decrease in unplanned downtime and maintenance costs. 2. 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: • 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Determine savings from reduced overtime and improved labor productivity. • 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Assess savings from reduced scrap and better inventory management. • 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Evaluate savings from optimized energy usage. 3. 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: • 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Include software, hardware, and implementation costs. • 𝗢𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Account for maintenance, support, and training expenses. 4. 𝗥𝗢𝗜 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮: 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮: ROI = \frac{(Net Benefits - Total Costs)}{Total Costs} \times 100 Where Net Benefits = Total Savings - Total Costs. 5. 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: • A positive ROI indicates that your MES is delivering value beyond its costs. • Regularly review and adjust your metrics to ensure continuous improvement. By following these steps, you can effectively measure the ROI of your MES and make data-driven decisions to enhance your manufacturing operations. #𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 #𝗠𝗘𝗦 #𝗥𝗢𝗜 #𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 #𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 #𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆4.0
