Healthcare Advocate | Burnout Survivor Turned Thriver | Travel Health Coach | Writer | Speaker | Pharmacist | Empowering clients to OPTIMIZE their HEALTH & DEMYSTIFY the healthcare system
“Do you think that’s appropriate? For them and the others in the waiting room?” A student nurse was about to place a client, who was transported by ambulance to the emergency department, into the general waiting room. His response: “I’m a student, I don’t really work here, we need the triage room. There isn’t a bed available. I'm not sure what I can do.” Honestly, I get that. A student does what they’re told, and his training says: intake > vitals > triage. The waiting room makes sense since it wasn’t a heart attack or gunshot. What triage doesn’t factor in is Patient Dignity AND how one person’s condition will impact the health of others around them. So, I politely yet firmly stood in the doorway and said: “I understand what you’re saying; however, please find me someone who can help solve this problem. They cannot go out there. It doesn’t respect their dignity & isn’t helpful to the others who are sick awaiting treatment.” They found a bed. How different would their care have been had I not been there? I don’t know. I want to think someone would have thought, “This doesn’t make sense,” Yet I’ve spent enough time in hospitals to know that “sense” isn’t included in the decision matrix flowchart. Healthcare leaders & decision-makers: How are you empowering staff with the power to look up from the process and ask: “Is this right? Does this make sense? Would I want my family or myself treated like this?” Mindlessly following process removes the power of observation, questioning, and, in this situation, our humanity & dignity. To those leaders and policymakers: let’s connect. I have 10 hours of insight I'd like to discuss. #patientsafety #patientadvocacy #patientexperience #patientcenteredcare #healthcarepolicy #medicationsafety #riskmitigation #healthleadership #healthcareadvocacy #healthcareleaders #patientrights #hospitaladministration #healthcareadministration #healthcaredesign #healthcareconsulting #patientoutcomes

#The_Solution_Stack: Private Patient Advocacy The need for Private Patient Advocacy is growing because there are significant unmet needs in healthcare. Dr. Leschak's story highlights the kind of difference an astute, experienced guide can make in these critical healthcare moments where a patient could not be expected to muster self-advocacy. Having a medical professional alongside who is also laser focused on one's comfort, privacy, education, and dignity during the complex healthcare journey is personalized support when one needs it most. I have no doubt that your work will also help us reveal causal patterns and solve many of these issues systemically for the benefit of all. We need more of this!

📣 #BreakingNews in #HealthcarePolicy: 𝗕𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 The Biden administration recently unveiled a proposed rule targeting nursing home staffing, stirring a diverse mix of reactions across the healthcare sector, political landscape, and advocacy groups. Here's what you need to know: 🔹 Minimum Staffing Mandate: A push for at least three hours of direct care per resident per day, including time with registered nurses. 🔹 Advocate Criticism: Some view the rule as too lenient, falling short of standards set two decades ago. 🔹 Workforce Shortage Concerns: Critics argue the rule overlooks current labor market challenges in nursing. 🔹 Federal Law Vagueness: The proposal seeks to bring clarity to the "sufficient staffing" standards in current laws. 🔹 Staggered Implementation: Special provisions for rural and underserved communities. 🔹 Audit and Inspection Overhaul: Expanded audits and new analyses of state inspection reports. 🔹 Industry Opposition: Economic concerns and workforce shortages are cited as major barriers. This rule highlights the intricate balance between ensuring quality care, addressing workforce availability, and managing economic constraints in healthcare. Christopher Curran and I from CarePatrol of Connecticut were talking about the topic the other day and its potential impact on skilled nursing facilities. 🤔 We'd love to hear your thoughts: Is this rule a step in the right direction? What would you do differently? 👇 Share your opinions in the comments!

Repeated studies show that employees with supportive leadership and a strong sense of community in the workplace are significantly less likely to feel burnout. Nurses have one of the highest levels of burnout, yet are less likely to report feeling appreciated or supported in their work environment. We cannot fault nurse managers, who often do not have designated time or resources to create team connection. This is a systemic gap in the healthcare industry. We are encouraged by the many health systems who are starting to make this a priority and working to address this behind the scenes. In the meantime, resources like The Nursing Beat's new column specifically providing a safe-space and solutions for managers in healthcare are paving the way for change. #healthcare #nursing
