DID THE UCL ACTUALLY FALL OFF? Scrolling through my football dominant timeline on X (formerly Twitter), I couldn't help but notice a pocket of fans claiming that the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Europe's current premier football competition, has fallen off in terms of quality. My question is, did the competition actually fall off in terms of quality? And if it did, why did it fall off? Also, can the competition be saved with this new format being introduced? We'll gradually take a dive into this over time. #football #footballbusiness #sports #sportsmarketing #ucl

Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) #Sports covering Rugby Australia's trial to further protect #Rugby players from possible concussion injury. Initial trials and research from data collected over the last six years have shown that the risk of concussion is 4.2 times higher when a tackler's head is positioned above the sternum of the ball carrier. The safest place to tackle is between the waist and sternum. The new law (9.13) has been adopted across all Rugby Victoria competitions, excluding Super Rugby Pacific & Super W elite competitions. Dangerous tackling now includes, but not be limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the line of the sternum. This law trial demonstrates one of the steps to reduce the risk of brain injury in collision sports. The benefits for both kids & adults playing rugby union far outweigh the minimal risk of a concussion injury. Source: Tom Maddocks, Sports Journalist. The old 'can-do attitude' extends from my professional life into my personal life! ⚡ If I have my sights set on achieving a goal, you best believe I will do everything in my power to accomplish it. If you have a moment, check out the story below by Chris Pike (feels a little like my autobiography)!
#WAFLW DEBUT QUITE THE FEAT FOR IRISH BASKETBALLER🏉 The WAFLW competition didn’t even exist when Holly Coomey made the move down under from Ireland, but after a strong basketball career her transition to a new sport saw her make her debut for Peel Thunder Football Club Inc. in Round 1. Admittedly, I had a knee jerk reaction when I saw all the pink and purple in the World Rugby initiative Rugby Rising Play. (Sidenote: at 42 years old I'm working on understanding my own conditioning against societally identified "girlie things".) But looking at the broader negative reactions to this promo, reinforced self-reflection regarding my initial reaction and how that conflicts with my genuine belief about the sport of rugby - Women and girls are diverse, and all types of folks play and enjoy rugby. I have arrived here: This promo video is a good reminder that we need many different paths to entry into the game that make all people and children feel comfortable to join the game. Rugby is not just about being tough, it is also about finesse, tactics, style, and evolving as a game - and for that we need all kinds of people to join. If there is a sector of girls that will see this and feel that rugby is a place where they may belong - as fans or as athletes - it is a good thing and I applaud it. Women and girls are NOT a monolith, even in a tenacious sport. Some of the best athletes I coached only ever participated in theater or cheerleading or music and they applied their focus and became amazing rugby players. We as a rugby community have to reach our hands out to every type of person and let them decide if they want to be a part of the community. This World Rugby promo is an example of that. And YES, rugby needs fans! So even when people try rugby and find that playing the sport isn't for them, there is still a place for them as a fan. As for the fandom, children - especially girls, can find strength in watching others display their toughness. We allow boys who have never played Pee-Wee Football (little kids American football) to watch and admire the NFL players each week. We see how it makes them feel powerful and confident, so why not girls and rugby? Are we, as a rugby community, defining little girls who like pink, purple, and sparkles and resigning them to be moms and caretakers only?!? If so, that is absolute rubbish. So let's broaden the circle - that's what the women+ of this game have been doing. You should continue to follow our lead.
Welcome to Rugby Rising Play 👋 This is World Rugby’s first bespoke girls' participation programme designed to support efforts in welcoming girls into rugby, whichever way they choose. The future of rugby is on the rise, are you coming? For further details, check out this link 👇 https://lnkd.in/e4NsXk7T

Love this post from David Clancy ☘️about athlete availability. In my years of working in high performance sport, and trying to push the boundaries of human performance through marginal gains and innovation, I always felt very grounded by the fact that above all else, an athlete who is available to train with the quality, frequency and consistency that has been prescribed by their programme, will be seven times more likely to reach their goal. Physical and psychological availability are like gold dust in sport. And that's why it's so interesting to me that we are still rubbish at quantifying and doing something about the impact that menstrual cycle symptoms have on availability of athletes. We've got pretty good at reporting that it's a real issue. The data is so consistent in every research paper that describes the proportion of active women and athletes whose quality or quantity of training is impacted by physical or psychological symptoms of their cycle. Another paper landed in my inbox today confirming (again) what we already know... that in a sample of 300 female athletes, 74% had physical symptoms and 63% had psychological symptoms related to their menstrual cycle. Follow up interviews found these symptoms decreased performance of these athletes, both in competition and training (Bugaevsky, 2023. J Clin Anesth & Res). Given that three quarters of athletes will have availability impacted by the menstrual cycle, and we know availability is key to successful performance (as brilliantly described by David below), what are we doing about it? Are we doing enough? Are we doing the right things (lots of below-par attempts to collect menstrual cycle data from athletes but do nothing useful with it)? Of course, it's complex. If availability was easy, every athlete would have nailed it by now. But it's affected by so many bio, psycho and social factors, some of which are unpredictable, that it's an ever present challenge in sport. But when it comes to the menstrual cycle, we know enough - we know symptoms are impacting availability, we know there are things we can do to help manage symptoms (if you don't, go buy our book!), and we have good tools to monitor the impact of interventions. So what's the problem? Again, it's complex. Some athletes are afraid to report symptoms for fear of judgement or selection consequences. Some are supported by coaches who are uncomfortable talking about the topic. Trainers and practitioners haven't historically had access to good information about how to help their athletes manage symptoms. And there is a deep rooted acceptance of suffering being a normal part of having a female reproductive system that we also have to undo. But for now, I believe we can all do better. We know the issue. We have solutions. We can measure their effectiveness. By helping athletes manage symptoms we can improve their availability, which in turn will improve their performance. What are we waiting for? #femaleathletehealth
Recruitment + Professional Development for NBA, NFL, Premier League⚡Follow me for Learning & Development for the Team Behind the Team
The best ability is player availability for a sports team. An equation: available players = more wins. 5 reasons why this matters. Munster Rugby, my team...are decimated with injuries. It will hurt their chances of winning this weekend. In the 2016 Premier League, Leicester City, an underdog team, clinched the title - BECAUSE their key players were available more often than those of their competitors. This is the important part. It wasn't about who had the most expensive team, but... about who consistently had their best players on the pitch. --- I enjoyed putting this together. Hope it sparks some thinking. #sportsmedicine #performance #recruitment

Digital transformations will focus on lots of different digital touch points for an organisation. To have the biggest impact, you need to take deep dives into "all things digital" (and non digital sometimes) to leverage the value to an organisation. This is *one* of the areas we focused on with Rugby League and we couldn't be more excited for what this partnership is going to deliver for the fans, the athletes, the league and the clubs, as well as the various stakeholders & partners involved. Shout out to the team for getting us to this point. Adam Treeby, Rhodri Jones, Xavier Green, Andy Yeandle, Will Foote, Dan Chirwa, Alastair Pickering #ThereIsNothingLikeLeague
