It is awesome to see an investment memo (in this case, the 'why we invested blog') have the vision that so closely aligns with the founders.' That's what I see here. Jahed Momand was one of the first investors I met, without whom this round wouldn't have come together so well. Excited to have arguably *the* most active nature-tech investor on our cap table. Welcome Jahed Momand and Matthew Stotts 🌐 from Cerulean Ventures!
At Cerulean, we've looked at the carbon markets and MRV sector and long asked ourselves where the alpha and impact lies within them. There's no real market for carbon dioxide (we've had to stretch ourselves into pretzels to create one), and no one wants to pay for MRV, yet every NGO and government on the face of the Earth will tell you they want to invest in the [nature-positive, regenerative transition]. So who's going to pay for it? That's what the team at our next investment, Epoch, set out to build — emissions monitoring and payments for sustainable supply chains, starting with food and ag. We're extremely impressed by Jinal Surti and William Ouellette's ability to move quickly, understand customer problems, ship new products, and book early revenue. We estimate the market for monitoring cross border commodities and their land use associated emissions at somewhere near $700B — MRV is a part of the puzzle, but delivering payments to the actually existing human beings who do the work is a key, non-negotiable part of said puzzle, and they have great traction on this front. We're honored to add them to our portfolio in the #naturetech space.
