One of the hardest parts of building a great team is hiring. Hiring the right resource can make you. The wrong one can break you. AND, more than that, it's just not a fun process. Which is surprising as it's kind of like shopping. You get to browse about. You get to do your research. You sometimes even get to try them on for size. And then....you reach nirvana! You love them. You can't live without them. YOU HIRE THEM! Then, they ghost you, and you're left to wonder why. I realize this happens on both sides of the hiring equation. Potential hires get ghosted all the time. But that is for a different day and a different blog. An Open Source Hiring Philosophy & Capitalizing On Emergent Behavior When building tech teams, I prefer self-motivated individuals passionate about the project, even if unpaid. This mirrors how tech teams often hire previous open-source contributors. Of course, there's a balance—this isn’t about free labor. However, roles like "Community Manager" can be filled by those who naturally align with our mission, actively engaging and organizing without prompting. For over a decade, I've done this, from fraternity rush chair to organizing Supperclub events. I believe in valuing emergent behavior over just qualifications. Does a highly qualified candidate for a community management role engage genuinely with our community, or are they only attracted to the job’s cool factor? True passion persists even when challenges arise.
