How are utilities making the most of the potential short- and long-term advantages of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI? And what are the challenges that widespread adoption of AI may create in the energy industry? EPRI Senior Program Manager Robert Eugene Austin, III was one of seven energy industry experts invited to discuss these and other issues in the October broadcast of the United States Energy Association (USEA) Virtual Press Briefing, “The AI Revolution Underway in the Utility Space.” Organized and moderated by Llewellyn King, a veteran Washington D.C.-based news and public affairs host, panelists, including Austin, faced questions from five national and international energy-beat reporters from The Economist, Forbes, PBS, and others. Super cool talk from Eric Smidt, ex-Google CEO, shedding light on the economics and geopolitical implications of AI. According to him, Sam Altman estimates that over 300 billion dollars will be required to build the AI of tomorrow. Surprisingly, the challenge lies not in the money but in the energy supply. The US currently lacks the capacity to power a 300 billion AI system. 😂 The solution? Establish partnerships with other nations. Options include the Middle East, known for its near-unlimited energy resources, or Canada, boasting a significant amount of hydropower and a close ally. The full talk below. 🌐 #AI #Geopolitics #Partnerships #EnergySustainability
