The #2024RestaurantShow show closed this week, and I'm happy to say, it was business as usual. What do I mean by that? I mean it in the best of ways. There were plenty of innovative new products on display, great speakers and sessions, and many great connections to be had, as usual. It is truly THE conference for our industry. The food and beverages on display ran the gamut of new and trendy to traditional and classic, and everything in between. For me, the classics win out. Pizza is my jam, and the show did not disappoint this year. I also made a trip to the Vienna Beef booth for a good old fashioned Chicago-Style Hot Dog (dragged through the garden, as they say). Grilled cheese, anyone? Sorry if you missed the Tillamook booth, because that was a mighty good sandwich! I rounded out my sample journey with a trip to the Lil' Orbits booth for some fresh mini donuts. A real a crowd pleaser. Elohi Strategic Advisors had our own booth again this year and shared some of our space with a new partner, Longbottom & Co. The absolute best Bloody Mary mix on the planet. It will make you re-think the Bloody Mary. While the food and beverage samples were great, there were other themes that I noticed along the way. Sustainability was at the forefront, with compostable packaging, plates and utensils everywhere. Automation was another major theme. From upgraded cooking and dispensing solutions, to full on robots, there were plenty of options available to help operators solve labor and efficiency issues. The last theme that stood out to me was simply the overall quality of the discussions I had on the show floor. From attendees asking all the right questions, to exhibitors who understood the industry and all of the challenges that operators face, the relationship-driven nature of foodservice business was in full swing. The National Restaurant Association Show reminds me every year why I love this business.
