I’m so proud of the the work we’ve achieved to build a more disability-smart organisation across Raytheon UK. From the outset, we’ve been laser-focused on building a great experience for all of our people and to help achieve this we’ve built a truly best-in-class approach to adjustments/accomodations through: 1. Removing the need for “diagnosis” - we support in breaking down barriers where they exist. 2. Removing line-manager approvals and centralising the budget. 3. Building a pro-active approach to adjustments - we use our digital ClearTalents tool to identify barriers from Day 1 of employment based on the overall employee journey, rather than wait for them to arise. 4. Purposeful conversation - we don’t just talk about disabilities this week, in partnership with our RTX ADAPT ERG we have a regular dialogue about disability topics throughout the year and help our employees understand what they can do to help us build an inclusive experience for all. 5. Invested over 1,000 development hours this year to train over 400 people leaders in Supporting People with Disabilities and Long-Term Condtions at Raytheon UK to ensure that they have the confidence and capability craft the right experience for their people. Like everything, this is a journey, but it’s a path well trodden for Raytheon UK - we’re making a tangible difference for our people and are committed to building an environment where every single colleague can work, grow and belong.

The 2024 Sonoma County Mayors’ Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities will once again be honoring businesses in our community which help to demonstrate the value inclusion of people with disabilities bring, not only to the community, but also the businesses themselves. During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, or NDEAM, we celebrate the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. NDEAM takes place annually each October, but its purpose is to confirm our commitment to ensuring disabled workers have access to good jobs, every month of every year. That’s the spirit behind this year’s official theme: “Access to Good Jobs for All.” We will be honoring businesses which have made efforts to engage individuals with disabilities through partnerships with local non-profits and government programs, and Community Advocates who make training and reentering the workforce easier. As we become more mindful of how space impacts behavior and culture, we should strive to shift our thinking from “designing for” to “designing with.”

Disability Pride Month Celebrated in July to mark the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was passed on July 26, 1990. The goal of Disability Pride Month is to promote inclusion (equal opportunities for those with disabilities), change views (challenge stereotypes about disabilities), and empower (help those with disabilities feel proud and advocate for their rights). Ways to celebrate: -Learn more about disability experiences and history - see our book recommendations in this post. -Encourage inclusive practices. -Support disability-owned businesses. -Advocate for better accessibility. -Encourage inclusive practices.

Share a story of community impact made by a person with a disability. • Inclusion Canada's initiative on deinstitutionalization is a powerful example of impactful community advocacy led by individuals with disabilities. This initiative, aimed at transitioning people with intellectual disabilities from institutions to community living, underscores the significance of self-determination and inclusivity. By advocating for person-centered planning and the right to live in the community, this movement has made considerable strides in transforming how society supports individuals with intellectual disabilities, promoting their full participation and inclusion in community life. • To engage further, consider exploring resources on deinstitutionalization, watching documentaries on the subject, or participating in conversations about community living for people with intellectual disabilities to foster greater awareness and support for inclusivity (Inclusion Canada).

Disability Pride Month originated in the United States to commemorate the passing of the July 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Today, it’s a global event that celebrates people with disabilities, their cultures, and their contributions—aiming to shift perceptions, end stigma, and affirm disability as natural human diversity. Jill Houghton – President & CEO, Disability: IN Reflecting on Jill Houghton's words, completing this course on Autism in the workplace further reinforced the notion that "Autism is about deep love." Just as love necessitates continual reflection and dedication, fostering inclusion demands ongoing effort. Whether in educational settings or within diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, every gesture carries substantial weight. This course emphasized the critical need to foster deeper levels of comprehension and empathy, urging us to aspire towards creating environments that are more inclusive, where every individual is not only valued but also empowered to thrive.
