How well do you know the 'Contaminant Related Selection Factors' that should be considered when choosing the correct respiratory protective equipment (RPE)? According to the AS/NZS1715:2009 standards, the following contaminant-related factors shall be considered as part of the RPE selection process: 🔹The nature, toxicity, physical form, and concentration of each contaminant 🔹Whether failure of the device can result in a situation that is immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) 🔹The need to wear other PPE, e.g. eye or skin protection to protect against irritants 🔹The possibility of the contaminated atmosphere being flammable/explosive Photo: Dräger SCBA respiratory protection designed for an IDLH environment. On a great many occasions i encounter situations where workers continue to share PPE ensembles between shifts. Whether it be emergency responders sharing self contained breathing apparatus, or the trades sharing one set of arc flash protective clothing. This is wrong on so many levels. 1. PPE, in all the forms it takes, must be sized specifically to the sizing needs of every individual. In fact an incorrect fit can have dire consequences for every current or potential user. 2. We are in the middle of a pandemic (and let us not forget SARS in 2003). The notion of workers sharing the same SCBA masks or arc flash ensemble, when measured against the risk of spreading disease or illness,, should unsettle all of us. We can discuss cleaning and disinfection options, but how would we ever know that process has actually worked. I am interested in the thoughts and feedback from other safety professionals on this topic. Please repost so that we might all have an opportunity to weigh in on this subject. #wellness #ppe #illnesses #covid19 #diseaseprevention ##sharingknowledge #safetytraining #workersafety #disinfection #contaminationcontrol #sharingisnotcaring

I agree, PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment, not SPE, Shared Protective Equipment. having a harness that is fitted for me, worn by me, inspected by me, will never be shared. I am the only one who knows if I snagged it, burnt it, shocked it. if it is shared what's to say that the piece of equipment was not stressed or damaged. I never share my personal PPE, if someone takes my PPE without my approval, I will make them buy me a brand new piece to replace the one they borrowed. Safety is a major factor, but so is hygiene and the spread of germs, etc. I don't want to wear my full face respirator that someone else was sweating and spitting into as they breathed and talked. Each employee should be given the appropriate PPE for the job and assigned any specialized PPE. In most cases I always upgrade my PPE from what the employer was obligated to give me. It is the one last piece of protection before dealing with a potentially dangerous task. so why wouldn't I want the best I can afford. Keep it clean, stored safely, inspected, and ready to use.

Combating MDROs with Cleaning: Jani-King of Cleveland employs a multi-pronged approach to combat MDROs: Targeted cleaning and disinfection: Utilizing EPA-registered disinfectants specifically effective against MDROs. Color-coded cleaning system: Preventing cross-contamination by designating specific cloths and mops for different areas, especially high-risk zones like isolation rooms. Proper use of PPE: Ensuring our cleaning staff utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, gowns, and masks to minimize exposure risks. Extended contact times: Following recommended dwell times for disinfectants to ensure complete eradication of MDROs. Data-driven approach: Monitoring cleaning efficacy through ATP testing and other methods to identify and address areas requiring improvement. www.janiking.com/cleveland

🔍 Properly doffing a respirator is crucial to minimizing contamination and ensuring safety. Here's a step-by-step guide: Preparation: Start in a clean area with hand hygiene facilities nearby. 🧼 Gather necessary equipment like gloves and gown. 🧤 Hand Hygiene: Wash hands for 20+ seconds with soap and water or use sanitizer with 60%+ alcohol. 🚿 Inspect Respirator: Check for damage or contamination. 👀 Doff Respirator: With clean hands, remove bottom straps first, then top straps. 🧴 Avoid touching the front to prevent contamination. 🚫 Dispose of Respirator (if disposable): Seal in a designated waste container. 🗑️ Hand Hygiene Again: Wash hands thoroughly or use sanitizer. 🤲 Additional Steps: Depending on the situation, more steps like showering may be needed. 🚿 Regular training is crucial. Day 18 of 31 Days of Biosafety Personal Protective Equipment Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is vital in maintaining biosafety in laboratories, healthcare settings, and environments where individuals are exposed to infectious agents, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. PPE is a barrier between the individual and the potential hazard, preventing skin and mucous membrane exposure and reducing the risk of transmission. Properly worn PPE, such as gloves, gowns, masks, respirators, and eye protection, can significantly minimize the risk of occupational illnesses and injuries. PPE is the last line of defense when protecting workers from infectious diseases. By wearing appropriate PPE, individuals protect themselves and prevent the spread of infectious agents to others, thereby maintaining a safer working environment. #BiosafetyMonth #Sitero #ResearchCompliance #PPE
