Northern Lights has applied for CO2 storage acreage announced by the Norwegian Ministry of Energy in March.    We are seeing a significant market interest for CO2 transport and storage as a service in Europe and an expansion of the Northern Lights CO2 storage capacity is part of our growth ambitions.    The ministry has previously awarded seven CO2 storage licenses on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), and the new announcement of acreage is another step towards making Norway a central arena for CO2 storage in Europe, according to Minister of Energy Terje Aasland.    Northern Lights was awarded the first exploitation license for CO2 storage on the NCS in 2019 and will be ready to receive CO2 this year. https://lnkd.in/gdrdCu2r

🇳🇴 Norway ready for large-scale CO2 storage. The Norwegian Ministry of Energy announces three areas in the North Sea for companies to apply for exploration licenses related to CO2-storage on the Norwegian continental shelf. The application deadline is 29 August 2024 at 12:00 p.m. Succeeding with large-scale CO2-storage is important for the world to reach its climate goals. The Norwegian government are facilitating the socio-economically profitable storage of CO2 on the Norwegian continental shelf. “I am pleased to see the significant interest from companies wishing to explore the possibility of offering emitters in Europe profitable, large-scale CO2 storage as a service. The government will facilitate that CO2-storage can become a new ocean industry for Norway by safely and securely storing large amounts of CO2 that otherwise would be emitted in Europe,” said Minister of Energy Terje Aasland. Norway - A total of 109 km of pipeline has been laid for the Northern Lights carbon transport and storage project. Phase one of the project will be ready to receive CO2 in 2024 with a storage capacity of up to 1.5m tonnes per year. Northern Lights, Norway's first CCS licence, is an important part of the Longship project, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale CCUS plan. Lots of interesting updates in the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies report on CO2 shipping, which emphasises the importance of CO2 shipping in Europe: - construction of CO2 ships underway; not only the 7,500m3 Northern Lights variety, but 22,000m3 at the Hyundai shipyards - with construction times of 12-36 months, the critical path of vessel construction is less than the underlying CCS projects they will service - a useful rule of thumb; a 20,000 tonne CO2 ship carrying out a one-week round trip will carry circa 1MTCO2pa These all accord with 7CO2's estimates of construction and capacity requirements. https://lnkd.in/eP3DKbFy

Ben Cooke I’m sorry Ben - but you need to go back to school and re-do your physics. Removing CO2 at a concentration of 420 parts per million requires moving huge volumes of air over some sort of absorbent, as well as energy to process the chemical to extract the CO2, then cool, compress, transport and inject the CO2 into a reservoir… “If you filtered all of the air in the Grand Canyon, you’d get about 1,270 tons of CO2” Just to put that into context, that is the CO2 produced per year by under 100 US citizens…. “About 40 billion tons of CO2 a year are added to the atmosphere. If we wanted to just deal with 10% of our annual increase in CO2, we’d need to filter the air out of 32 million Grand Canyons” For context: There are about 3,200 billion tons of excess CO2 in the air that we’ve added since before the Industrial Revolution. DACS is not only a PR gimmick giving cover to fossil fuels businesses but it also represents a huge diversion of resources from more effective decarbonisation. Inert ceramic firebricks - used in our fireplaces and kilns - have been modified to conduct electricity and generate heat. Heavy industry craves heat -- currently supplied by burning fossil fuels. The system is called Joule Hives, and it can store electricity from renewables or during off-peak hours and release 1800-degrees Celsius, flame-temperature heat during the day to generate steam. https://lnkd.in/gUT-D8fa

Although it isn't exactly 'new' news, it is important to not get caught with CO2 tunnel vision. LNG is a great example, and one alternative fuel solution that does regularly get airtime as a suitable alternative to more conventional fuels for road transportation. Higher energy density and roughly 25% less carbon content seems like win-win, but as with many things the devil is in the detail. Broaden the view to consider all greenhouse gases and the benefits quickly vanish into, well, thin air! https://lnkd.in/esYUe7ZQ

Norway is leading the way in the fight against climate change by gearing itself up to store CO2 under the North Sea through the state-owned enterprise Gassnova SF. Captured CO2 from land-based industries across Europe, including from Germany, will be sequestered under the seabed off the coast of Norway. The so-called ‘Longship Project is being carried out by a joint venture between the three oil giants Shell, TotalEnergies and Equinor. Around €2.5 billion has already been invested in the construction of transport ships, a temporary storage facility and a pipeline transporting liquid CO2 to the storage site - proving that there is a growing CCS value and infrastructure chain for ships with CCS systems installed to integrate with in the very near future.
