The theme for today is to make a BIG promise of how we hope to continue or start our efforts in contributing to real change. Let's start by actively listening to what needs to be done to make our working environments a better place to be. Taking action, even small behavioral changes, can make all the difference to others. For change to happen, we have to be open to facing some hard truths: unconscious bias, the actions of our ancestors and modern-day racism happening in front of our eyes. It is not in our nature to critique ourselves and sit with the realisations that come from it. It is uncomfortable and painful. But it is necessary. This deeper understanding is my aim for 2024. To continually learn more, to listen with the backing of what I have learned, then use my knowledge and privilege to act and change. It is only in learning about and sitting with these discomforts that we can truly start to understand the roots of racism, how it affects our colleagues and friends, and work collectively towards a more equal future.' Race Equality Week 2024! 🌍 This year's theme is #ListenActChange, a powerful call to action chosen by the Race Equality Matters community. The theme reflects critical findings and feedback within the REM community: 🔍 Only 25% believe their organisations focus on tangible action, change, and impact, not just words. 🤝 63% feel that less than a quarter of allies are actively contributing to tackling race inequality. 👥 44% acknowledge commitment from senior leaders, but only 21% see them making a tangible impact. Race Equality Week (5 - 11 February 2024) is a UK-wide initiative uniting thousands of organisations and individuals to address race equality barriers in the workplace. Tackling race inequality is everyone’s business. Whilst we have seen improvements in ethnic diversity in law, there is still much work to do to build a more inclusive profession.
