The Community Relations teams from our eight retirement communities gather quarterly for a day of sharing successes, fostering growth and development, and learning from one another. We recently welcomed life transition coach Shelley McIntyre, who led an enlightening discussion on building trusting relationships based on personal values and motivations. By understanding the emotions behind words, we create win-win situations for everyone involved. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Shelley! #seniorliving #retirementcommunity #values

"Grandparents are the roots of our family tree, anchoring us in tradition and wisdom that guides our journey forward." Glenda Clare National Grandparents Day, celebrated on September 8, 2024 was the perfect time to reflect on the impact elders have on society. Grandparents with their wisdom and experience serve as architects of community resilience. Here’s how their support nurtures our collective well-being: - Grandparents serve as "Custodians of Tradition" preserve and pass down cultural traditions, stories, and values, fostering a sense of identity and continuity that binds communities together. - Grandparents are "Emotional Anchors" often provide stable sources of love and emotional support, which helps families navigate challenges and maintain mental well-being. - "Practical Wisdom" - With years of experience, grandparents offer invaluable advice on problem-solving and life skills, equipping younger generations with tools to face adversity. -Grandparents foster "Intergenerational Bonds" by nurturing relationships across generations. They strengthen family ties and encourage a sense of mutual support within the community. -Many grandparents actively engage in "Community Service, Volunteering and Mentoring" offering their time and talent to support local initiatives. -Often grandparents play the crucial role Of "Health Advocate"promoting healthy habits and lifestyles, influencing family health practices that ripple through the community. -"Crisis Management" - During difficult times, grandparents frequently step up to provide stability and assistance, helping families and communities recover and rebuild. Let’s honor and support the grandparents who shape our communities with their wisdom and love. Reach out, appreciate their contributions, and find ways to engage them in community life. Their legacy of strength is our beacon of hope. #NationalGrandparentsDay #CommunityResilience #GenerationalWisdom #FamilyStrength #CulturalLegacy #BuildingResilience

Advice to those transitioning: Take the time to reintegrate back into your family and larger community. Every case is different. Four us, it’s been over four years of living away from our home, the last 2.5 years of driving 4.5 hours each way to be home on the weekends. It’s been tough and I’m thankful to be home. The reality is that it’s an adjustment for everyone, my fabulous wife, our children (in 2020 we had three living at home, now one). Even our two year old lab mix is having some adjustment issues. It takes a lot of patience on everyone’s side of the equation. The most difficult thing for me individually is understanding that I am the variable that has unbalanced everyone else. What I got right was taking the time to adjust and reintegrate back into my family. I understand that I have to be flexible and fit into their sense of normalcy. I haven’t rushed into the next project or career. Everyone and every situation is different with varying financial situations, so my advice to anyone transitioning is take the appropriate time to make the adjustments and create a strong foundation for your family’s future. Take care of the elements that ground you, keep you rooted in laughter, and then get after the rest. I’m interested to hear your experiences, and learn what worked or didn’t work for you?
