Part 396 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations establishes minimum qualification standards for individuals performing DOT annual inspections and commercial vehicle brake inspections. Generally speaking, inspectors must be sufficiently knowledgeable of the required inspection criteria and the methods and tools used to conduct those inspections. They also must be capable of performing the inspections by virtue of training, experience, or a combination of both, which can include at least 1 years’ worth of experience performing the applicable inspections at a fleet, in a commercial garage, or via a state, federal or provincial inspection program. 👉 Check out the video below for even more details on this topic 🚛 To dig deeper into the regulations and access leading educational content, try out eRegs, the first app-based digital version of the FMCSRs: www.eregs.app https://lnkd.in/g-ty38tD #trucking #truckingindustry #dotcompliance #eregs

§ 396.25 Qualifications of brake inspectors. (e) No motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider may employ any person as a brake inspector unless the evidence of the inspector's qualifications, required under this section, is maintained by the motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider at its principal place of business, or at the location at which the brake inspector is employed. The evidence must be maintained for the period during which the brake inspector is employed in that capacity and for one year thereafter. However, motor carriers and intermodal equipment providers do not have to maintain evidence of qualifications to inspect air brake systems for such inspections performed by persons who have passed the air brake knowledge and skills test for a Commercial Driver's License. =============================== CDL holders have an out to do pre-trip inspections on equipment with air brakes, if they passed the air brake test. For CMVs equipped with electric or hydraulic brakes the carrier must qualify employees as brake inspectors so they may perform pre-trip inspections.
