What's yours...?🤨 Job Titles. Sometimes they're simple. Sometimes someone decides to get creative and call you something random. Sometimes companies just straight-up get it wrong. A creative job title is all well and good when you're happy in your role, but when you start your job search it begins to get a little difficult. If your job title on your CV is something random like "Energy Executive (Band 4)" when in reality, you're an Electrical Maintenance Engineer, then you're about to lose out on opportunities you should be considered for. When it comes to writing a CV, put your job title down in it's simplest form, that way no one can mistake you for something you're not. The same goes for employers, when advertising a job, make the job title as clear as possible to ensure you peak the interest of the maximum amount of potential candidates. Yesterday, I came across a job advertisement in a local daily hiring candidates for a Gas Plant in various posts such as Supervisor, Technician, and even Driver. In their advertisement, they mentioned the eligibility criteria as 8th pass to graduate, and the salary ranges from 27K to 74K. Now, on the first observation itself, it seemed pretty fishy to me for several reasons: -> Why would such a reputed organization like ONGC post job recruitment in such an inept way? Notice that the spelling of the word 'Guard' is incorrect. -> Why are they posting recruitment to hire supervisors, accountants, technicians, plumbers, and even security guards altogether? These are the job roles of totally different fields. Even after all these questions in my mind, since this advertisement was published in a reputed newspaper and not on any online job portal, I sent my resume to the given email address for their consideration. I was surprised. Not only did they reply to me within a couple of hours of my email, but they straightaway declared that I had been selected and sent an attached PDF to go through the other formalities. This raised my suspicion even stronger. How can you select someone merely based on their resume and without conducting any formal interview? Then when I opened up the PDF, it became crystal clear to me that this is actually a fraudulent job posting. In the PDF, it was mentioned that in order to proceed with the recruitment, I need to pay an application fee of 2150/-. No legitimate company ever charges a candidate for hiring them. Once I realized that it was a fraud, I did not entertain any of their communication anymore. But this incident indeed has taught me a lesson. Till now, I was under the impression that whatever postings are published in the reputed daily newspapers are definitely legitimate and it is safe to apply to them. But now I know that is not the case in reality. Even if it is an advertisement from a valid source, we must verify its credibility first before considering applying.
