Using scent in design - Inclusion vs Omission: When we think about how we experience spaces, many guidelines focus on omission rather than inclusion. For example, last week we talked about IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), which removes scent and produces clean air. However, what are you noticing as you observe the world around you? Have you realized how vital the sense of smell—and by extension, taste—are to our experiences? Perhaps we got here because there has been a pervasive idea that humans are not very good smellers. The reality is that humans actually have a highly attuned senses of smell. In fact, we can discriminate at least a trillion olfactory stimuli! If we rely this much on our sense of smell to make sense of spaces, are we unintentionally creating spaces that lack depth by omitting scent? “Designers have no power to create impact. Our job is to make beautiful things.” is a paraphrasing of one panelist’s opinion during an ironically named “Designing for Impact” talk at 3 Days of Design. Why a “genius” designer at the peak of their career would share such a sentiment, much less participate in a discussion on creating impact, I do not know, but I could not disagree more. Having attended 3 Days of Design for the last five years, this year marked an incredible shift in moving away from just featuring new interior design products to discussing the role design has in creating value in society – and yet the comment above was not a standalone. Thankfully the wonderful Akanksha Deo Sharma saved the above mentioned panel with her own sentiment: that design is already creating impact. Which is clear to see when you look beyond the borders of Northern Europe and through other lenses of design. And not only design of products, but design of commercial models. Anders Munk Jepsen, CEO of NORNORM, shared an insight on driving the transformation from linear to circular economies and business models: to build a circular business model, it needs to be incubated and grow next to the linear model. In other words, there is no smooth transition from linear to circular. A linear business model can be improved through material innovation and new design systems that make repair easier and profitable, but a truly circular model is a venture that is invested in until it reaches a scale that can overtake the linear model. And not only design of commercial models, but design of workplaces. The Chief Creative Developer of UMAGE shared how five years ago they had transitioned their company to a four-day work week. Having lost talent to larger design companies with a more competitive paycheck, they found that they could offer something more valuable to their employees: time. While they don’t seem to measure the financial gains, it can only be imagined that there are significant savings related to increased retention, a gender equitable team (& leadership), better talent attraction and a more productive and creative workforce. Hopefully next year’s will be a bit stronger on the mechanics of circularity in the design industry, more concrete on how design can be a tool for change beyond products, and on what role technology will play in the design industry (seemingly absent this year eye) 👀 🤞 #circularity #design
