With approx 60% of the world's arable land and 30% of the world's known mineral reserves, a balance must be struck between meeting global demand for critical minerals, whilst protecting farming land. Artificial intelligence provides the genesis for a more sustainable mining future in Africa.

With the global demand for lithium soaring, securing a stable supply chain is paramount. The quest for lithium has led countries across the world, from the mineral-rich soils of Africa to the high-tech processing plants in China, to seek ways to ensure a constant flow of this precious resource. The USA and the EU, recognising the critical nature of this mineral, are working to forge international alliances to become less vulnerable to supply disruptions.

Coal india ltd is of the opinion that it may not be profitable to mine the latent coal reserves from the identified 34 discontinued coal mines. if it is so, why government has to involve private miners in such efforts...in wasting their time, money manpower, technology and in rare unfortunate occasions loss of life. the private minors have to mobilize their machineries, man power, development of any more infra structure facilities, etc before starting the mining operations, for which they have to shell down huge money. the government should have continued mining to extract fully the coal reserves.. does it afraid of extending beyond safer depth or zone.? so government should think these aspects too.

Multidisciplinary Trailblazer | Technical&Social Innovator | Mechanical&Materials Engineer | Project/Program Manager&Evaluator&Monitor
Thanks Christian Saublens, Keeping this issue on the agenda is crucial to finding a solution. The transition to a #lowcarbon, #circulareconomy hinges on securing a stable supply of #criticalrawmaterials (CRMs) like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. With demand projected to surge by up to 500% by 2050, Europe faces strategic challenges – import dependency, geopolitical risks, and supply vulnerabilities. In my recent article (https://lnkd.in/dBScEKjR), I propose an EU Critical Raw Materials Act – a comprehensive blueprint to safeguard Europe's technological leadership, economic resilience, and climate ambitions. Through #diversification, #responsiblemining, #circularinnovation, and #strategicpolicyinterventions, we can navigate the CRM nexus and forge a sustainable path forward. Key Highlights: 🔊 Holistic solutions addressing technical, economic, environmental, and ethical dimensions 🔊 Integrated policy strategy with targeted mechanisms to drive materials innovation 🔊 Dual technical approach: alternative chemistries and circular design principles 🔊 Emphasis on international cooperation, recycling, and fostering a skilled workforce On the technical front, I recommend a dual approach: aggressive exploration of alternative chemistries leveraging #greenchemistry principles, and #circulardesignthinking focused on recyclability, bio-compatibility, durability, and modularity. The establishment of #interdisciplinary consortia, investments in infrastructure, and fostering a diverse #materialsworkforce are crucial for bringing these solutions to fruition. As stewards of a sustainable future, the #materialssciencecommunity must lead the charge in developing reliable, responsible solutions for CRM access.

Fantastic, investors should welcome such a policy, as it guarantees security and reduces political risk exposure. Any investor, especially foreign who opposed this, should go and explore for minerals in China, India, Australia, North America and Middle East. I believe Africans corporates are matured to fund exploration or upstream activities. Calling on foreign investors is a risk mitigating exercise by Africa, but once familiar with risk adjustment, Africans will take charge of the entire upstream/downstream value-chain process that time is nearly here. Case in point "Dangote" of Nigeria.

Consultant | Social Development | Involuntary Resettlement | Social Performance | Livelihood Restoration | IFC PS5 | WB ESF | AfDB ISS
I am impressed by the insights of Karien Lotter, who spoke at the Mining Indaba in South Africa along with other eminent land access speakers such as Mike Steyn. She highlighted the importance of managing the resettlement process for new projects, which can have significant impacts on the local community’s physical and economic well-being. She said, “Securing land for new projects often involves a resettlement process to manage physical and economic displacement impacts of the local community. If these displacement impacts are not managed deftly, they stand a high chance of becoming a significant barrier to the timely and successful production of the minerals we are after.” This is a crucial message for enhancing the social performance of mining companies and ensuring the sustainability of their operations. #resettlement #landacquisition #livelihoods #socialimpact #sustainability #stakeholderengagement #mining #communityengagement #performancestandards #IRMA
