In this article I talk about a form of systems problem: the arms race. In it I describe how everyone rationally maximizing safety buy buying bigger vehicles actually results in everyone being less safe. How might we deal with such systems problems?

USA first reported Pedestrian Death 1899. As a follow up to my post on ISA - saw this interesting post on the first pedestrian fataility involving a motor vehicle in the USA. This article talks about a petition in 1923 to install speed Governors on vehicles in cities. This was in response to the soring death rate of pedestrians in cities. In the early days of motor vehicles (through to the 1920s) a majority of the fatailities in cities involved the death of pedestrians - who were not use to the faster moving vehicles. The article then talks about how the big car manufactures made it about the poor behaviour of the pedestrians - like jaywalking. This perspective seems to be still with us - at least in the minds of some of our politicians. But who was first - the pedestrians or the motorists. It’s the motorists who were introduced into the urban environment and this lead to rises in pedestrian deaths. I find it ironic that we want to control the e-scooters speeds or ban them outright (the new modes of transport), because of the danger to pedestrians. Yet we won’t do that to private cars and light trucks - Even though the bulk of pedestrian deaths occur when they are trying to cross the road and are hit by a vehicle. I think we need to partner with public health officials, doctors and surgeons to promote speed management in urban areas to address this 100 plus years of tragic carnage on our city and town roads. #pedestrian safety #visionzero #trafficsafety #publichealth.

Did you see this at the convention center at RE + this year? If you took a plane, then the train, then your automobile/Uber to the 3rd floor and looked out the window, you might have caught a glimpse of this. Panels that need cleaning. Between the lack of rain, wildfires in the distance during the show, and overall human activity, they need some attention. Now multiply this system by the number of systems in the region. Seems like an opportunity to optimize the production. Fracsun Catlin Mattheis Bryan Fisher - what do you believe the losses could be and what would be the uplift in production?
