My favorite quote from Gary V about attending a conference was "Don't be an a$$hole". It's incredibly hard to be present and attentive when at these large conferences like #shoptalk2024 and #nrf2024. TBH - it's a jungle. There are thousands of people everywhere moving by you, reading your badge, determining whether you are worth to talk to, and then moving forward. No conversation that lasts more than 2 minutes and constantly wandering eyes. I hate that. And I can't stand coming to these large conferences because of it. You're not human at these places - you're a tag that if someone determines you're worth their time, they will look up and talk to you. This is not how people are meant to function. If someone smiles at you, say Hi. If someone approaches you, have a real conversation. Don't even look at their badge - ask their name and ask them how they are doing. Fuck where they work or what position they hold - be a human and give a damn. Don't be an a$$hole. It's important to be human. And it's important to be present in a conversation. Not just for others but for yourself.
