🥳I’m excited to share that I’ve just completed the “Leading Global Expansion” course! 🌍 Global expansion can help a company grow faster, enjoy the benefits of global scale, and tap into the unique advantages of different locations. However, it also presents numerous challenges such as exposure to unfamiliar cultures and markets, difficulties in coordinating far-flung operations, and greater organizational complexity. Whether global expansion adds or destroys value depends on a company’s ability to build the necessary local capabilities in different markets and manage the global network effectively. In this course, led by Dr. Anil K. Gupta and Haiyan Wang, two of the world’s foremost experts on global strategy, I learned how to maximize the benefits and minimize the costs and risks when leading a company that spans multiple markets. For the past 6 years, I have only been to my Shanghai office 3 times, with each trip comprising just an hour-long meeting followed by a team dinner. (Source: OECD, 2021) 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗯𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀? Preserving productive and satisfied employees, you must trust them, exert the right amount of pressure, motivate them, and make them feel valued. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽? 1. Institutionalizing flat hierarchies. Commonly there is a short distance between leadership and employees and a high degree of delegation of power and responsibility. 2. Establishing a corporate culture of trust: instead of micromanaging projects, employees are trusted to carry out tasks in line with common goals, teamwork, and the idea that every employee has a voice, responsibility, and influence. 3. Involving employees in decision-making. It is crucial that a leader listens to all employees when making and implementing decisions, rather than emphasizing their personal authority. 4. Acting primarily as a coach who inspires and motivates their employees. Leadership is exercised based on visions and goals. Employees follow their leader on their own initiative. 5. Continuous learning and development, sharing knowledge and important information with each other, creating an environment based on mutual trust and a sense of shared responsibility and common goals. 6. Encouraging cooperation within the organization. The focus is on consensus rather than competition and determination. 7. Empowering employees, promoting a high degree of freedom and influence, and encouraging dialogue within the organization. 8. Promoting the compatibility of work and family life. 9. Having the courage to take risks, but also take responsibility if something goes wrong. Demonstrating a high level of integrity. Please note that there are small nuances in leadership style in the Nordic countries. If you do this, you will be well on your way to harnessing the power of Nordic leadership and reaping the benefits in the form of higher productivity and more engaged employees. It's been an awesome week of learning and connecting over at Joyous Australia. On Tuesday, Alex Badenoch led a transformation-focused discussion with some key leaders representing some of the country's most innovative companies. Alex shared some of her learnings from leading Telstra's transformation as part of their T22 strategy. Here are some of my key takeaways that any leader working through a significant change program can apply: • Clarity – be clear on your transformation goals and make sure you are explicit about your measures of success. Don’t try to be too precise or perfect, try to get your high-level transformation plan onto one page. Publish this early for both internal and external stakeholders. Communicating up-front will quickly surface questions while helping to drive leader accountability and follow through in delivery. • Transparency - transparency is critical for all levels of the business. It accelerates understanding and engagement with the change. Sometimes the necessary changes will be tough on the workforce. While they may not agree with all of them, this clarity helps to avoid the negative impact of employees being surprised by what will happen further down the track and builds trust. • Make it real & relevant - translate major changes into the specifics of how they will impact individual functions and teams. Feedback is key to identifying what roadblocks exist at this level and how to overcome them. These roadblocks are not always apparent to senior leadership and can seem tactical in the broader transformation picture, but they can be real sticking points for the workforce's ability to adapt. These points really resonated with the group, a common theme being "How do we take more of a 'bottom-up' approach to transformation?" Some great discussion, followed by some exceptional food at Gimlet in Melbourne (thoroughly recommend it for those who haven't been!).
