We've overseen the targeted and specialist explosive demolition of the turbine hall bases at Sizewell A nuclear power station - significantly reducing the timetable for their removal. [Read more - https://shorturl.at/SJdkK] The longstanding structure on the Suffolk decommissioning site was substantially weakened using explosive materials by Nuclear Restoration Services workers. Following a series of enabling regulatory decisions, our inspectors were content to allow this novel and innovative method as part of the demolition of this key building.

Big Milestone at Hinkley Point B 🚀 Today marks a significant achievement as ONR oversees the defuelling of Reactor 4 at Hinkley Point B in Somerset. This milestone, completed under the diligent operation of EDF, paves the way for the beginning of defuelling work on Reactor 3. The removed nuclear fuel from Reactor 4 will be safely transported to Sellafield in Cumbria, ensuring secure storage. 🎥 Defuelling at Hinkley Point B began in August 2022 after an impressive 46 years of electricity generation. It's inspiring to see such a seamless transition into the defuelling phase. The end goal is to have the site fully fuel-free, transferring the nuclear site licence to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority for subsequent decommissioning work. This seamless progression underscores the robust safety protocols in place. Mike Webb, ONR's Head of Operating Reactors Sub-Division, highlighted the importance of this phase: "Defuelling removes the vast majority of the radioactive hazard. We will continue to regulate the site effectively to ensure compliance with all regulations to safeguard workers and the public." GREAT Federal and State Financial Support (seems to be a PRUDENT decision) - The U.S. Department of Energy approved a $1.52 billion loan to Holtec International. - The Michigan state put $300 million toward the Palisades restart. HISTORY Palisades*** Nuclear Plant STARTED in 1971, was SHUT DOWN in 2022, with the present aim of REstarting the 800 MWe reactor and extending its operation until at least 2051. (Potentially, a whopping 80 years.!) *** Looking at my Largest Privately held Power Plant DATABASE , suggest one of the RECORD Shorter Construction Duration- Compared to Today's Nuclear Industry Experience.! [1] First Concrete was poured on March 4, 1967. [2] Reactor Vessel was Delivered to the Site on October 22, 1968. [3] First nuclear chain reaction occurred on May 24, 1971. [4] First commercial power generation took place on Dec. 31, 1971. TOTAL DURATION = [4] - [1] = < 5 years.! Stephen Lecce, our client OPG, and our joint venture partner AtkinsRéalis at an event yesterday to announce the contract award for the refurbishment of Units 5-8 at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. The collaborative contract includes the definition phase work for the retube, feeder and boiler replacements. Aecon is playing an important role as the constructor on North America’s three largest nuclear refurbishment projects – providing future generations with clean, safe, reliable, and affordable electricity while stimulating the economy and further expanding Ontario’s strong nuclear supply chain.
