It is important to build new renewable plants but is also more important to preserve the installed power. Revamping could help investors and IPPs to recover the nominal power lost in the last decade and increase energy production by converting the PV plants from fixed to tracker structures.

I“Renewables are moving faster than national governments can set targets for. This is mainly driven not just by efforts to lower emissions or boost energy security – it’s increasingly because renewables today offer the cheapest option to add new power plants in almost all countries around the world,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “This report shows that the growth of renewables, especially solar, will transform electricity systems across the globe this decade. Between now and 2030, the world is on course to add more than 5 500 gigawatts of renewable power capacity – roughly equal the current power capacity of China, the European Union, India and the United States combined. By 2030, we expect renewables to be meeting half of global electricity demand.” By the end of this decade, the share of wind and solar PV alone in global electricity generation is set to double to 30%, according to the forecast. However, the report emphasises the need for governments to ramp up their efforts to securely integrate these variable renewable sources into power systems. In this framework KEY - Italian Exhibition Group from 5 to 7th of March 2025 will represent the hotspot in the Mediterranean basin where these important issues will be discussed together with all the international #Stakeholders! 🫴🏻 Download the IEA annual report!

Italy as energy hub in the Mediterranean, not only for natural gas but also for renewables, crucial to ensure a sustainable energy supply and to fight against climate change. Renewables, along with transmission and distribution networks, playing a key role in this process. Essential to consider the interconnection with other Mediterranean countries to create a real energy hub. #energy #larepubblica Terna SpA read @https://lnkd.in/dtA_4t2Y

📌 After more than five years, renewable energy communities (RECs) in Italy are at the starting blocks: the dedicated website of the GSE (Gestore Servizi Energetici) should open on April 8th. 🙄 Still, some details of the legislation could hinder their development, particularly for grassroots initiatives not backed by industrial partners or institutions. What's the problem? 😓 First, the legislative process was extremely lengthy and left many new plants in a limbo. When the missing pieces were finally in place, all the plants that started operations between the approval of the first and the last piece of legislation were declared unable to generate incentives for their REC. 😓 Secondly, there's obviously a threshold to the number of incentives a plant can collect or generate, and this rule obviously applies also to the incentives that renewable plants may generate to the benefit of RECs. This is fine of course, but there are so many support schemes for renewables in Italy, often uncoordinated and ranging from the national to the regional level... that there's hardly any room left for RECs. 😟 Finally, the legislation is such that if a plant unable to generate incentives joins a REC, the REC itself risks loosing part of the incentives generated by its other members. As a consequence, RECs are forced to exclude some plants, and reduce their positive impact in terms of balancing intermittent renewables at the local level. 💚 Why so? Any plant joining a REC might simply believe in the project, and/or wish to contribute to a smoother management of intermittent renewables. At least this latter point could be corrected with little effort, and it would help a lot! 👉 If you want to know more, here's the link to the short article I wrote with Roberto Bianchini for Staffetta Quotidiana. Fingers crossed for Italian RECs, though! 🤞 https://lnkd.in/dKgm8vBZ #renewables #energycommunities #italy #energytransition

In a recent interview with PV Magazine, I had the opportunity to discuss the implications of Italy's Agriculture Decree on the solar industry. The decree has sparked uncertainty, affecting investor confidence both locally and globally. Higher installation costs and delays in renewable energy development could potentially lead to increased electricity prices for consumers, prolonging reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, Italian farmers appreciate the stability offered by solar installations, compensating for the unpredictability of agricultural income, contrary to public perception. A “transitional FERX” will be setting rules for subsidies in Italy up to the end of 2025, with some significant differences compared to the long-term design. 📌 Despite the initial intention to provide locational signals to drive renewables build-out, no adjustment coefficients will be adopted to rank bids. We can expect that assets in areas with highest load factors will sit below in the merit-order, regardless of the local saturation level. 🔆 For solar assets, a correction factor will be applied to the awarded price, based on the local solar irradiance. Will it be rewarding or penalising? ❌ The FERX was expected to provide protection against curtailment risk since the potential energy rather than the actual one fed into the grid was supposed to be remunerated in the draft FERX design. However, it seems that the protection will be guaranteed after 20 years, by extending the duration of the contract for the occurred curtailed hours. #ferx #powermarket #subsidyscheme #energytransition #renewables

Great news for Italy's energy sector! 🇮🇹 The European Commission has approved the FER2 decree, promoting the development of renewable energy plants with emerging or high operational costs. This initiative aims to achieve 4.6 GW of new capacity by 2028, including offshore wind, zero-emission geothermal, biomass, floating solar, marine energy, and more. This approval is a game-changer for Italy’s offshore wind farms, which have faced legal hurdles in MASE. Minister Gilberto Pichetto stated, "This is a significant step towards our energy goals, enabling crucial new technologies for decarbonization." With this decree, Italy can accelerate its existing renewable energy plans, overcoming past obstacles and making significant progress in sustainable energy development. https://lnkd.in/dpt4MQwr #RenewableEnergy #Italy #OffshoreWind #Decarbonization #Innovation #Sustainability

Asset Manager Power Plants at Swiss Federal Railways | EPFL Mechanical Engineer and EMBA candidate at SUPSI
Innovative Solar Energy Project at the Ritom Dam! Exciting news from the energy sector in Ticino, Switzerland! The Ritom SA, a joint venture between the Swiss Federal Railways (75%) and the Canton of Ticino (25%), represented by Azienda elettrica ticinese (Aet), is set to create the first solar power plant on a dam wall in the region. Situated at the Ritom dam in Piora, Quinto, at an altitude of 1'850 meters, the project involves installing 382 photovoltaic modules along the 309-meter upper crown of the dam. With a total installed capacity of 164 KWp, the plant is expected to produce an estimated 153 MWh per year, suppling the new hydroelectric plant in Piotta. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to meet future energy needs sustainably. The new hydroelectric plant, representing a significant investment of around 350 million Swiss francs, is poised to be a key energy project for the Swiss Federal Railways and the Canton/Aet over the next 50 years. The solar installation is planned for the summer of 2025, with an investment of approximately 450'000 Swiss francs, marking a step towards an even more sustainable footprint for the upcoming hydroelectric powerplant. #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #sbbcffffs #cantonticino #aet #solarpowerplant https://lnkd.in/e7E-tapi
