SEMICON China, the largest semiconductor trade show in China, took place last week. As a weather bell for the industry in China, the lack of US/European exhibitors, vibrant Japanese and Korean presence and growing (technologically) Chinese ecosystem continues to show that US export controls are having the opposite desired effect. China's independence is growing, technical and innovation capacities are catching up, and those willing to do business with China will see more opportunities to grow their technology adoption. Those who don't might see their technology replaced. At Influence Matters, we support cross border innovation and cooperation as a prerequisite for a better future. SEMICON WEST, one of the largest and most influential global semiconductor industry events, has always been held in San Francisco. Starting from 2025, it will be held biennially in Phoenix, Arizona. What does this mean? This change carries significant implications. It can be interpreted from the following perspectives: 1. Increasing importance of Arizona: It demonstrates that Arizona, especially the Phoenix area, is emerging as a new hub for the U.S. semiconductor industry. This is a result of investments from TSMC, Intel, and now Amkor Technology. 2. Result of policy support: This can be seen as evidence that the U.S. government's proactive semiconductor industry fostering policy, through the CHIPS and Science Act, is yielding tangible results. 3. Changes in the industrial ecosystem: As semiconductor manufacturing-related companies concentrate in Arizona, it indicates the formation of an industrial ecosystem. 4. Shift in global semiconductor landscape: It suggests that the center of the semiconductor industry, traditionally focused on Silicon Valley, is shifting. The relocation of SEMICON WEST, widely regarded as one of the largest semiconductor trade shows globally, underscores the significance of this shift. 5. Implications for Korean companies: Korean semiconductor companies should take note of these changes and may need to consider investment or collaboration opportunities in the Arizona region. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a profound discussion hosted by Germany Trade & Invest, ZVEI e. V. & OAV - German Asia-Pacific Business Association, focusing on the semiconductor industry and markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Here are my key takeaways: 👉 Strategic Focus on Asia-Pacific: The Asia-Pacific region remains a thriving hub for semiconductor growth. The market dynamics are rapidly evolving, offering both significant challenges and opportunities. 👉 Government Strategies and Funding: Experts from the region highlighted how local governments are aggressively positioning themselves to capture a larger share of the semiconductor market. As new players like India, Vietnam, and the Philippines enter the scene, competition is set to become even more intense. 👉 The Need for Europe to Act Swiftly: As the competitive landscape sharpens, Europe needs to take quick and decisive action. Ceating further incentives for investments will be crucial to maintain a competitive edge. The European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) urges a Chips Act 2.0 — an essential step at this time.
