These are some recent 316L stainless steel sinks, which are made from three main parts: a folded central section and two individual side panels. The components were first tacked together before being fully welded using the TIG welder. This method is preferred for stainless steel due to its precision and ability to produce clean, strong welds. A critical step in this process is preventing “sugaring” — the term for the undesirable effect of weld penetration on the interior surface of the sink, which can cause oxidation and rough, porous areas. Once the welding is complete, the heat-affected zone (HAZ) on the inside of the sink, which can show discoloration due to the heat, is carefully cleaned. This is typically done by removing the oxide layer, restoring the surface’s smoothness and ensuring that the sink remains free from contaminants. Finally, the outside of the sink is polished to achieve a high-quality, smooth finish.
