📃Scientific paper: Have pulsar timing array methods detected a cosmological phase transition? Abstract: We show that the recent detection of a gravitational wave \(GW\) background reported by various pulsar timing array \(PTA\) collaborations including NANOGrav-15yr, PPTA, EPTA, and CPTA can be explained in terms of first order phase transitions \(FOPTs\) from dark sector models \(DSM\). Specifically, we explore a model for first order phase transitions that involves the majoron, a Nambu-Goldstone boson that is emerging from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a $U\(1\)\_\{L\}$ or $U\(1\)\_\{B-L\}$ symmetry. 📃Scientific paper: Electroacupuncture for motor dysfunction and constipation in patients with Parkinson's disease: a randomised controlled multi-centre trial Abstract: BACKGROUND: Motor disturbances and non-motor disturbances such as constipation are the main factors affecting the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). We investigated the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture combined with conventional pharmacological treatment on motor dysfunction and constipation in PD. METHODS: In this multi-centre randomised controlled trial, we enrolled 166 eligible participants between September 19, 2018 and September 25, 2019 in four hospitals in China. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to the electroacupuncture (EA) group and the waitlist control group. Each participant in both groups received the conventional pharmacological treatment, EA group received 3 sessions of electroacupuncture per week for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was the change in the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score from baseline to week 12. The secondary outcomes included the evaluation of functional disability in motor symptoms and constipation, the adherence and adverse events were also recorded. FINDINGS: At week 12, the change in the UPDRS score of the EA group was significantly higher than that of the control group, with a difference of −9.1 points (95% CI, −11.8 to −6.4), and this difference continued into weeks 16 and 24. 📃Scientific paper: Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic tumour of borderline malignancy mimicking kidney duplicate: cases report and literature review Abstract: Background Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic tumours with borderline malignancy (PRMC-BM) are rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We are the first to report two cases of PRMC-BM which mimic a duplex kidney and evaluate the outcomes of different surgical procedures. Case presentation We describe two cases of retroperitoneal cystic tumours. Both were diagnosed with duplex kidney with hydronephrosis on computed tomography scan. The first patient underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery and was found to have a retroperitoneal cystic tumour. The other patient underwent an ultrasound-guided puncture before surgery and was diagnosed with retroperitoneal lymphangioma. Retroperitoneal cystectomy was performed using an open transperitoneal procedure. The final pathologic diagnosis in both cases implies PRMC-BM. The open surgical approach was associated with a shorter operation time, less intraoperative blood loss, and protected cyst wall integrity by comparing the different surgical approaches. During follow-up, the patient in the first case had tumour recurrence six months post-surgery, and the other patient was healthy without recurrence or metastasis 12 months post-surgery. Conclusions Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic tumours with borderline malignancy can be enclosed within the kidney and misdiagnosed as other cystic diseases of the urinary system. Thus, an open surgical approach may be more suitable for this type of tumour. 📃Scientific paper: The complex genetic architecture of Alzheimer's disease: novel insights and future directions Abstract: BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia. AD is highly heritable, with heritability estimates of ∼70% from twin studies. Progressively larger genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have continued to expand our knowledge of AD/dementia genetic architecture. Until recently these efforts had identified 39 disease susceptibility loci in European ancestry populations. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS: Two new AD/dementia GWAS have dramatically expanded the sample sizes and the number of disease susceptibility loci. The first increased total sample size to 1,126,563—with an effective sample size of 332,376—by predominantly including new biobank and population-based dementia datasets. The second, expands on an earlier GWAS from the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) by increasing the number of clinically-defined AD cases/controls in addition to incorporating biobank dementia datasets, resulting in a total sample size to 788,989 and an effective sample size of 382,472. Collectively both GWAS identified 90 independent variants across 75 AD/dementia susceptibility loci, including 42 novel loci. Pathway analyses indicate the susceptibility loci are enriched for genes involved in amyloid plaque and neurofibrillary tangle formation, cholesterol metabolism, endocytosis/phagocytosis, and the innate immune system. 📃Scientific paper: Aging-Associated Thyroid Dysfunction Contributes to Oxidative Stress and Worsened Functional Outcomes Following Traumatic Brain Injury Abstract: The incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) increases dramatically with advanced age and accumulating evidence indicates that age is one of the important predictors of an unfavorable prognosis after brain trauma. Unfortunately, thus far, evidence-based effective therapeutics for geriatric TBI is limited. By using middle-aged animals, we first confirm that there is an age-related change in TBI susceptibility manifested by increased inflammatory events, neuronal death and impaired functional outcomes in motor and cognitive behaviors. Since thyroid hormones function as endogenous regulators of oxidative stress, we postulate that age-related thyroid dysfunction could be a crucial pathology in the increased TBI severity. By surgically removing the thyroid glands, which recapitulates the age-related increase in TBI-susceptible phenotypes, we provide direct evidence showing that endogenous thyroid hormone-dependent compensatory regulation of antioxidant events modulates individual TBI susceptibility, which is abolished in aged or thyroidectomized individuals. The antioxidant capacity of melatonin is well-known, and we found acute melatonin treatment but not liothyronine (T3) supplementation improved the TBI-susceptible phenotypes of oxidative stress, excitotoxic neuronal loss and promotes functional recovery in the aged individuals with thyroid dysfunction. 📃Scientific paper: The backreaction of stellar wobbling on accretion discs of massive protostars Abstract: In recent years, it has been demonstrated that massive stars see their infant circumstellar medium shaped into a large, irradiated, gravitationally unstable accretion disc during their early formation phase. Such discs constitute the gas reservoir in which nascent high-mass stars gain substantial fraction of their mass by episodic accretion of dense gaseous circumstellar clumps. We aim to evaluate the effects of stellar motion, caused by the disc non-axisymmetric gravitational field, on the disc evolution and its spatial morphology. In particular, we analyze the disc propensity to gravitational instability and fragmentation, and also disc appearance on synthetic millimeter-band images pertinent to the alma facility. We employed three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of the surroundings of a young massive star in the non-inertial spherical coordinate system, adopting the highest spatial resolution to date and including the indirect star-disc gravitational potential caused by the asymmetries in the circumstellar disc. The resulting disc were postprocessed with the radiation transfer tool RADMC-3D and CASA softwear to obtain disc synthetic images. The redistribution of angular momentum in the system makes the disc smaller and rounder, reduces the number of circumstellar gaseous clumps formed via disc gravitational fragmentation, and prevents the ejection of gaseous clumps from the disc. 📃Scientific paper: Protective Effect of Nimodipine Against Valproic-acid Induced Biochemical and Behavioral Phenotypes of Autism Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Present study was designed to investigate behavioral and biochemical role of nimodipine in prenatal valproic acid (Pre-VPA) induced autism in rats. METHODS: Valproic acid was utilized to induce autistic phenotypes in Wistar rats. The rats were assessed for social behavior. Hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC) were utilized for various biochemical assessments, whereas cerebellum was used to assess blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. RESULTS: Pre-VPA rats showed reduction social interaction. Pre-VPA administration were decreased PFC levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), and glutathione along with hippocampus cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Also, the animals have shown increase in PFC levels of IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, Evans blue leakage and water content. Nimodipine countered Pre-VPA administered reduction in social interaction, CREB, BDNF, inflammation, oxidative stress, BBB permeability. CONCLUSION: Pre-VPA has induced autistic phenotype, which were attenuated by nimodipine in rats. Nimodipine and other calcium channel blockers should further investigate to check the management of autism. 📃Scientific paper: Epidemiological and virological surveillance of the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV among pregnant women in Togo Abstract: Background In 2015, Togo introduced the “test-and-treat” strategy for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. Pediatric HIV infection remains a public health problem in Togo, with a mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rate of 3.6% in 2020. This study aimed to estimate cases of HIV seroconversion during pregnancy and to identify pregnant women at high risk of transmitting HIV to their children in Lomé, Togo. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from 18 March to 22 May 2022 among women who had given birth in five maternity units providing PMTCT services in Lomé. Umbilical cord blood samples were taken from the maternal side by midwives after delivery. HIV serology was performed in the laboratory using the Alere™ HIV Combo SET and First Response HIV 1–2. Card Test version 2.0. A sample was considered positive if both tests were positive. The HIV-1 viral load in HIV-1-positive samples was measured using Cobas/Roche 4800 equipment. Information on the women was extracted from maternal antenatal records and antenatal consultation registers. Results A total of 3148 umbilical cord blood samples (median maternal age: 28 years (interquartile range [24–32]) were collected. Among them, 99.3% (3145/3148) had presented for at least one antenatal clinic visit before giving birth, and 78.7% (2456/3122) had presented for at least four visits. 📃Scientific paper: The effectiveness of governmental nonpharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19 at controlling seasonal influenza transmission: an ecological study Abstract: Background A range of strict nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were implemented in many countries to combat the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. These NPIs may also be effective at controlling seasonal influenza virus infections, as influenza viruses have the same transmission path as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different NPIs on the control of seasonal influenza. Methods Data for 14 NPIs implemented in 33 countries and the corresponding influenza virological surveillance data were collected. The influenza suppression index was calculated as the difference between the influenza positivity rate during its period of decline from 2019 to 2020 and during the influenza epidemic seasons in the previous 9 years. A machine learning model was developed using an extreme gradient boosting tree regressor to fit the NPI and influenza suppression index data. The SHapley Additive exPlanations tool was used to characterize the NPIs that suppressed the transmission of influenza. Results Of all NPIs tested, gathering limitations had the greatest contribution (37.60%) to suppressing influenza transmission during the 2019–2020 influenza season. 📃Scientific paper: Copper selects for siderophore-mediated virulence in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Abstract: Background Iron is essential for almost all bacterial pathogens and consequently it is actively withheld by their hosts. However, the production of extracellular siderophores enables iron sequestration by pathogens, increasing their virulence. Another function of siderophores is extracellular detoxification of non-ferrous metals. Here, we experimentally link the detoxification and virulence roles of siderophores by testing whether the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa displays greater virulence after exposure to copper. To do this, we incubated P. aeruginosa under different environmentally relevant copper regimes for either two or twelve days. Subsequent growth in a copper-free environment removed phenotypic effects, before we quantified pyoverdine production (the primary siderophore produced by P. aeruginosa ), and virulence using the Galleria mellonella infection model. Results Copper selected for increased pyoverdine production, which was positively correlated with virulence. This effect increased with time, such that populations incubated with high copper for twelve days were the most virulent. Replication of the experiment with a non-pyoverdine producing strain of P. aeruginosa demonstrated that pyoverdine production was largely responsible for the change in virulence. Conclusions We here show a direct link between metal stress and bacterial virulence, highlighting another dimension of the detrimental effects of metal pollution on human health.
