🎉 Partner Appreciation: Happy 20th Birthday to the ESA BIC Program! 🚀 What began as a visionary idea two decades ago has grown into an incredible network of 32 ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BIC Bavaria ESA BIC Northern Germany) across 22 participating countries and over 100 locations. 🌍 In that time, the ESA BIC program has made an extraordinary impact on the space sector: 🌟 1,700+ supported start-ups launched into orbit (figuratively and literally!) 🌟 EUR 556 million in investments in 2023 alone 🌟 5,075+ full-time jobs created and maintained to foster innovation and opportunity 🌟 173+ patents granted, driving intellectual property and groundbreaking solutions ESA BICs are far more than business incubators; they’re launchpads for ideas that redefine what’s possible in space technology, sustainability, and beyond. "A centre to innovate design & manufacture of space hardware has today opened in Vienna. Driving commercialisation in space, it is the first of its kind of ESA-backed disruptive innovation centres outside ESA’s own premises. Work at the centre will focus on accelerating the development of manufacturing for space, including the rapid prototyping of new materials, propulsion systems and making spacecraft and satellites. Austrian companies will be able to join the Austrian ‘PhiLab’, along with European partners that can demonstrate that they are bringing value to Austria, as well as universities, institutes and research centres. The lab will be managed by accent, which is a high-tech incubator for Lower Austria, in collaboration with Brimatech, a Vienna-based market research and consulting company, and tecnet-tt, a technology transfer organisation. How do you imagine ESA in thirty years? We asked ourselves this question during the convention on July 12th. The answers are varied, but one thing is certain: it is a journey we will embark on together. Teams from Florence, Milan, Dubai, London, Paris, Riyadh, Geneva, and New York gathered to discuss shared successes and objectives. During the meeting, we reflected on the milestones achieved and presented future strategic goals. In this context, our CEO Francesco Gori introduced a strategy aimed at consolidation, focusing on the well-being of people and the continuous improvement of working conditions. This programme empowers European companies to develop and validate innovative, commercially sustainable services using cutting-edge space technologies like satellite navigation, satellite communications, and Earth observation.   𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: ✅ 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: ESA offers 50-80% co-financing for feasibility studies and demonstration projects, with intellectual property rights remaining with the companies. ✅ 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘀: Submit your applications for any market sector at any time using the Generic call for Proposals. The European Space Agency - ESA 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 has played a pivotal role in transferring Airbus Operations' CO2 filtration technology 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡. Climate change is accelerating, with severe consequences like heatwaves, droughts, and rising sea levels. High CO2 levels threaten the Earth’s atmosphere, prompting companies to aim for "net zero" emissions. Airbus Operations developed 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐎𝟐 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, reusing it in various industries. Originally designed for the International Space Station (ISS) to filter CO2 and supply oxygen, this technology was adapted for use on Earth with the help of ESA Spark Funding Programme, initiated by the German ESA technology broker EurA AG. This innovation, nominated for the Future Prize 2023, 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐎𝟐 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫, which can then be reused in industrial processes, creating a closed cycle that prevents emissions.
