⏰ The time for electrification has come!⚡ Last week the Electrification Alliance, and its 2024 Chairs Walburga Hemetsberger, Chris Heron, and Julie Beaufils sat down with Nikolaus Johann Kurmayer from Euractiv, to talk about everything #electrification. As we highlighted in our interview, the best way to support Europe’s competitiveness is through cheap, renewable energy for households and industry.   It was great to see the reference last week to an Electrification Action Plan within the Commissioner-Designate for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen’s Mission Letter from Commission President von der Leyen. 👏 Now, we need the new European Commission to publish an Electrification Action Plan in its first 1️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ days! This is interesting, potential flows of 1.4 GW between GB and Germany should help alleviate some of the transmission issues in Germany with wind being up North and having trouble being transported to demand centers. Adding 1.4 GW of additional flexibility will be expensive, because Germany has some security-of-supply fears during winter months in light of coal and lignite closures, but GB also sees its highest prices in winter. I'm a little surprised that this project has not been put on hold due to uncertain impacts of CBAM though. CBAM may limit the benefits of the cable in the direction from GB to DE, even though GB is likely to have been slightly less carbon intensive in the period 7 years to 2 years before commissioning of this cable. Germany adds another cross-border flow and an explicitly auctioned one at that. Good news for energy nerds!

The New Terminal One at JFK will soon be the first fully resilient airport transit hub in the New York region that can function off-grid during power disruptions. As the mechanical contractor for this revolutionary project, we’re partnering with E-J Electric Installation Co. to transform the New Terminal One with an 11.34-megawatt microgrid - representing a new standard for large-scale renewable energy development in New York and the air transit sector.    Not only will this microgrid ensure uninterrupted operations, but it will also have a significant environmental impact. Compared to traditional grid-sourced energy, the project will achieve a 38% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, by eliminating emissions of criteria pollutants, the microgrid will contribute to cleaner air for surrounding communities.    These environmental benefits align perfectly with our commitment to sustainability and are a huge part of why we’re looking forward to breaking ground on this project, in collaboration with E-J Electric Installation Co. and AlphaStruxure.   Read more about this incredible project here: https://lnkd.in/eNbeGHRq

I won't confess to having read every paragraph of this report, but I'm interested in finding out more when it comes to decommissioning and repowering our older assets, and developing new renewable low carbon energy projects: 🌍 There are opportunities for the UK to capture more of the value chain for key clean energy industries and the potential to drive inward investment in domestic supply chains. (Page 43). 🌍 We will ensure communities directly benefit from clean energy infrastructure they host by building upon existing approaches and encourage consistency in community benefits across technologies. (Page 52).

⚡️ Scottish Ministers have given the green light for the Creag Dhubh to Inveraray 275kV overhead line connection project, securing the final major approval needed for SSEN Transmission’s Argyll and Kintyre upgrade. This milestone paves the way for the next phase of the project, which aims to increase the capacity of the electricity transmission network in the region to support growth in renewable energy and ensuring security of supply. 💡 The upgrade, part of SSEN Transmission’s wider £20bn Pathway to 2030 programme, will play a key role in helping Scotland and the UK meet its net zero and clean energy targets. By upgrading existing infrastructure, the project will improve the transmission of home grown renewable energy, strengthening the network and ensuring a more reliable energy supply for homes and businesses across the country. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/ej53uTxW

We are delighted to support the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) in the publication of the draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP). This is Ireland’s first ever spatial plan for renewable energy at sea. Together with our subcontractors Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG), we worked with DECC to identify the maritime areas within the SC-DMAP published today. Published alongside the draft South Coast DMAP was our independent economic analysis. This highlights the potential economic benefits associated with implementation of the plan. The plan could deliver inward investment of €4.4 billion and 49,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) years of employment to the Irish economy. Our analysis highlights that more than 65% of economic opportunities would be in the south coast region. We’re looking forward to continuing to support DECC through the consultation process, incorporating stakeholder feedback into the final proposals, and enabling Ireland’s renewable energy ambitions.
