Have you noticed your child squinting to see people or objects in the distance? They may have myopia, also known as nearsightedness. Did you know that myopia is on the rise among both children and adults? In 1971, 25 percent of Americans were nearsighted; now, that number has increased to nearly 42 percent. According to the World Health Organization, if current trends continue, approximately half the world’s population could be nearsighted by 2050. "Myopia affects quality of life and can increase the risk of developing eye diseases in adulthood that may lead to blindness," shares Nate Biancardi, OD, a board-certified optometrist at MultiCare Rockwood Eye & Optical Center – Downtown. While we can't necessarily prevent myopia, there are measures we can take to slow its progression. Learn more about why myopia is increasing and the latest treatments in the article below: https://lnkd.in/gP27ptRG

While hysterectomy may help significantly reduce pain from #endometriosis, a new study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology found that patients under 30 who underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy for benign disease experienced much higher rates of regret, particularly due to loss of fertility (39% vs 13.4% in older patients). Younger patients were also more likely to face postoperative complications and need further surgery. Very interesting look into RVU-based compensation and the inequality of insurance reimbursement in women’s healthcare compared to other surgical subspecialties.
Chief Medical Officer UK Good Samaritan Hospital Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon Clinical Professor of Ob/Gyn
This week on BackTable OBGYN: hosts Dr. Mark Hoffman and Dr. Amy Park discuss with Dr. Louise P. King, a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, and Christopher Robertson, a law professor at Boston University, regarding the inequitable reimbursement structures that persist within the field of OBGYN. Women’s health has a history of being underfunded in the United States, leading many women to receive suboptimal care. The guests emphasize the systemic discrepancies between gynecologic and other surgical disciplines. The conversation delves into the origins of these disparities, the complexities of revising current codes and creating new codes, and potential legislative and legal remedies to address gender-based inequities. The guests also stress the importance of patient care outcomes and the role of proper reimbursement in enhancing healthcare delivery. UroGynecologist and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeon at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine #gyneconomics expert
As many of you know, my primary research and advocacy interest is what I’ve coined #gyneconomics, the ways in which policy-level reimbursement and cash-flow inequities have rigged the system against prioritizing women’s healthcare. The Relative Value Unit is one of the most tangible touch points for how appalling these financial incentives really are and how women patients are ultimately are paying the price. Inequitable pay and billing for women’s healthcare services, driven by discrimination in the budget neutrality clause of the social security act, is shuttering Obstetrics and Gynecologic surgery services across the US because they can’t drive hospital revenue like men’s health services in Urology or Orthopedic services, for example. Why would a hospital provide women’s health services when sports medicine can generate more money in 30 minutes scoping a knee than Gynecologic surgery makes in four hours resecting endometriosis? If you don’t work in a protected, symbiotic model that centers the needs of women (like Magee Women’s Hospital where I practice) you’ll see Gyn services start to be discontinued and resources be limited. This needs to be changed before it is too late. I am happy to chat about this more with any interested parties!

6% is not enough. Although 19% of the U.S. population identifies as Latino, only 6% of physicians share that background. National Latino Physician Day aims to change this disparity and promote the health of our communities. As Norma Poll-Hunter, PhD, shares, the impact of Latino physicians extends beyond care. They foster connection, provide culturally responsive care, and are more likely to serve underserved communities. Join us in raising awareness about the urgent need to increase the number of Latino physicians. https://ow.ly/ExSi50Tzw9g #NationalLatinoPhysicianDay #NLPD #DiversityInMedicine
