In Part 1, we employed solution analysis and presented the outcomes of an ion balance to demonstrate that the diminishing efficiency of a refinery's MDEA-based tail gas treater was attributed to the infiltration of caustic soda from a different unit into the treatment solution. Throughout the analysis, it was also revealed that the laboratory measurement of lean H2S loading (as indicated in Table 1) should have led to improved treatment. In reality, a higher lean H2S loading was disguising itself as thiosulfate. A tail gas treater at a refinery, utilizing MDEA, encountered a decline in its ability to treat H2S, and this deterioration remained unexplained. Figure 1 provides a summary of the fundamental flowsheet along with operating data from January 15, 2004. Despite examining lean amine samples from the inlet and outlet of the lean/rich exchanger, no evidence of a leak was found. Gamma scans of both the absorber and regenerator towers affirmed the satisfactory hydraulic performance of the internals. Subsequent troubleshooting efforts were conducted in collaboration with process simulation using ProTreat.
