The push for Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) transparency calls for embrace of accountability by offering clear, credible data on the life-cycle impact of materials in building supply and construction. The open letter from the contractorsCAN (Carbon Action Network), supported by major U.S. construction firms like Clayco, Skanska, and Turner Industries, is urging building material manufacturers to provide EPD signals in a decisive call for sustainability. There is growing pressure on companies to adopt sustainable practices and meet evolving regulatory standards. Builders will prioritize partnerships with materials suppliers who can demonstrate verified environmental credentials, ensuring compliance with regulations and meeting client demands for environmentally responsible construction. Melanie Nakagawa recently highlighted building materials like steel and cement account for 13.5% of global carbon emissions. Suppliers must have data on hand to offer clarity on material selection, enabling them to make informed decisions that align with sustainability goals and green certifications. Providing comprehensive EPDs demands investment in lifecycle assessments, supply chain transparency, and digital tracking systems to accurately monitor and report product performance. Companies that fail to adapt risk being excluded from projects that require sustainable materials. Avanade is partnering with product suppliers as well as residential and nonresidetntial builders to streamline data collection, analysis, and documentation. Automated reporting ensures that EPDs are readily accessible. Moreover, builders can leverage digital platforms that integrate EPD data with building information modeling (BIM), allowing for more efficient project planning and optimization of materials usage. Those who adopt digital technologies to ensure transparency and meet sustainability goals will be better positioned to sell to markets facing stauncher regulation, and will also contribute to shaping a more environmentally responsible industry. We’re living in exciting times for sustainable construction, witnessing the rise of new standards and methodologies. As a sustainable construction professional, I believe the key to transitioning from conventional to sustainable construction is adopting the Life Cycle Assessment approach for our projects. To support this transition, I'm starting a new series of articles on LCA. This series will cover methodologies, benchmarks, standards, practical guides, and everything relevant around this form of analysis. Here’s the first article, which goes through the fundamentals of LCA, the types of impacts it assesses, and its application in the building industry. Let's drive sustainability forward, one project at a time! #SustainableConstruction #LifeCycleAssessment #LCA #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #ConstructionInnovation #EnvironmentalImpact

𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 50 embodied carbon-reduction policies and best practices A large part of the construction sector’s carbon emissions come from building products and materials – embodied carbon. Embodied carbon has become the focus of regulatory bodies, making it a risk factor for developers and investors to price into construction projects. This report is for developers and investors, who drive transformation at the early stages of building projects. It guides them on reducing embodied carbon and future-proofing new construction projects. The proposed measures and requirements are flexible and easily combined with different green building certifications or sustainability reporting systems. ----------------------------- Pecunica (www.Pecunica.com) supports the BuildAction initiative for sustainable development and action.
