"Fashion retailers must not use ‘natural’ imagery, such as green leaves, logos, or icons in a way that suggests a product is more environmentally friendly than it actually is" YES! 🙌 🙌 🙌 This is such a great opportunity for how people see 'sustainability' to change, and opens up a new era of integration and knowledge for sustainable fashion. Another great step forward in moving away from greenwashing, and empowering widespread education - this sets a benchmark for how fashion retailers should be marketing their products. This guidance comes from the Competition and Markets Authority's open letter to the fashion sector advising all retailers to review their claims and practices. Other key aspects: ⏺ Statements made about materials in 'sustainable' ranges must be specific and clear, such as ‘organic’ or ‘recycled’, rather than ambiguous like ‘eco’, ‘responsible’, or ‘sustainable’. ⏺ Any claims made to consumers about environmental targets must be supported by a clear and verifiable strategy. Wonder who will sign next.... #greenwashing #sustainablemarketing #sustainabiltymarketing

Will consumerism and environmentalism always fundamentally clash? Should the fashion industry take responsibility for discards? Imagine being able to not just buy clothes sustainably, but get rid of them sustainably as well. Or they can all end up littering the beaches of the world. #fastfashion #recycledfashion

After the parody fast-fashion ad by SNL, Australian Fashion Week and now the Global Fashion Summit, what has been made clearly obvious, is the gap between awareness and action in fast-fashion. We know it’s bad (even those who still partake), but what now? Actions you can take against fast fashion: -reiterate the message that buying less is the most simple and easiest solution to reducing our impact -sharing empowering resources about how to mend, repair, upcycle, restyle, or swap your clothes, or shop second-hand. -realise the irony in the same media outlets simultaneously writing articles about trends to jump on to … -support and buy from brands that are responsible and transparent about their practices, and ask questions if you’re unsure. -embrace a wardrobe that need not be minimal but capsule in the sense that it has longevity and each piece can be worn in different ways/with different pieces. -contacting legislators about proposed fashion-related policy *Although, I must say, it isn’t clear what/if any policy has been proposed in Australia, (I will share anything I find on here) - in the meantime, here is what you can do from a legislation point of view: -contact state or federal representatives to voice support for any developing legislation that incentivises circular fashion models, imposes extended producer responsibility for textile waste, mandates supply chain transparency and restricts greenwashing marketing tactics, pushing for policies banning landfilling or incinerating unsold stock, and advocating for updated Australian Consumer Law guidelines to crack down on vague "sustainable" labelling from fast fashion brands. -sign petitions: (should I create one?!) -advocate for -support campaigns by groups like Ethical Clothing Australia for mandatory due diligence laws to prevent modern slavery. Even without current proposed legislation, amplifying the need for policymakers to prioritise these issues can build momentum. Pointing to examples of progressive policies in other countries can provide a framework for Australia to follow - such as the EU’s recent proposals, which I will explore on here soon …

Last week the CMA published new guidance designed to help fashion retail businesses comply with the Green Claims Code. The guidance follows the CMA's review of green claims in the sector that started in January 2022 and the announcement that undertakings had been secured from three fashion businesses in March 2024. The guidance provides practical advice and illustrative examples that will be helpful for businesses making environmental claims about clothing, footwear, fashion accessories, and related services. Alongside the new guidance, the CMA has written to 17 fashion retailers, urging them to review their practices. We've also been reminded that the CMA will soon have new direct enforcement powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. For businesses in the fashion sector - from retailers and brands, to manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors - it’s worth reviewing the guidance and taking steps to make sure any environmental claims are accurate and don’t mislead shoppers.
