Electrification is a big part of the solution for the puzzle of decarbonization!! In the energy value chain, electricity is a carrier, but trouble is transformation of basic energy to appropriate form to be carried by this carrier can be done by variety of technologies, assets with wide range of fixed and variable costs. And here we are in really perplexing power sector!! -- Conversion assets have a wide range of fix and variable costs, in fact very high fixed in some cases, and zero variable in some other cases!! -- One’s which have zero variable costs are also weather dependent so you can’t get energy when you need it, it will only give energy when that zero-cost source of basic energy is there!! -- Electricity, as a carrier, works in balanced system only, supply = demand + losses, unbalance beyond a tight limit and whole carrier system will breakdown!! -- In fact, whole carrier system (power system) operation has to be done not violating several equality and inequality constraints!! -- So, you always need those firm dispatchable plants or converters of energy to electricity, deliver on demand!! -- Marginal costs that determine pricing, if left to market, can vary from negative, when demand is low and zero variable cost assets are giving surplus output to very high values, when demand is high and zero variable cost assets can't deliver!! (finer balancing mechanism and products are additional and bigger nuances) -- But you can’t let scarcity prices to go to those very high values (socio-politically NOT acceptable), so administrators put a “cap”. And here we have the big “missing money” problem. Complex both for the economists who have to design the market and power engineers who have to run the system reliably. Does it make you nostalgic, missing that integrated utility structure and all dispatchable plants... 🙂 But good part is we are finding solutions, and this is driving unprecedented innovations.
