The 16th annual Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum 2024 will take place from April 24 to April 26, and we are proud to have our Office Managing Partner and Head of Corporate - Jamaica as a moderator. The Forum is expected to gather 500+ policymakers, utilities, developers, financiers, and investors from across energy, climate, finance, technology, and industry. With a focus on accelerating investment in the energy transition across the Caribbean and inspiring action by creating an environment that encourages the market to meet, originate, and transact. Amidst global geopolitical tensions, the urgent push for decarbonization, and the vital quest for energy independence have elevated clean energy to a prominent position on the regional agenda, among other topics. 🌟 **Reflecting on CREF 2024: Building More Bankable Projects** 🌟 Earlier this year in April, I had the privilege of moderating a panel at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) 2024. Our panel, titled "Building More Bankable Projects: Preparation for Implementation," touched on the strides made in creating bankable projects across the Caribbean. While we acknowledged the ongoing and inherent challenges posed by the region's diverse regulatory regimes operating at varying stages of development, the conversation was ultimately optimistic. We explored innovative strategies and shared insights on how to overcome these hurdles, recognizing that scalability remains a critical issue. I'm encouraged by the progress we've seen and am confident that we are on the right track toward increasing the use of renewables in the Caribbean. Renewable electricity has pushed through a series of positive tipping points in 2023, despite challenges along the way. For ZEN specifically, we have many reasons to celebrate and to look forward to 2024. 🔍 How are #EU Member States progressing with the implementation of the revised #RenewableEnergy Directive? This includes identifying suitable areas for #solar, #wind, and #grid projects, and designating Renewable Acceleration Areas (#RAAs). ❓ How can #EU Member States achieve speed with quality in designating #RAAs? European Commission has today adopted its new recommendations and guidance for Member States to improve and streamline #permitting procedures and auctions, also covering the designation of #RAAs. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2Puup6q 🔎Our latest report examines #renewables spatial planning and the status of RAAs in six Member States: #Estonia, #Germany, #Greece, #Spain, #Poland, and #Portugal. We have evaluated the current state of spatial planning, focusing on #sensitivitymapping and #publicparticipation. 💡 Key insights: 1️⃣ Member States are not prepared for #renewableenergy coordinated planning and the designation of #RAAs in a manner that is inclusive and can minimise impacts to #biodiversity. 2️⃣ Balancing speed with quality: The urgency of accelerating #renewableenergy deployment must be balanced with maintaining environmental protection and public participation. 3️⃣ Despite showing more ambition for #renewableenergy, most of the countries facing significant challenges with spatial planning and designation of RAAs, except for #Portugal which is a front runner in the mapping of renewable acceleration areas despite challenges including administrative resources and public participation. For public participation, only #Estonia and #Germany have inclusive public participation well integrated into their spatial planning processes. 📢 With further mapping and designation ongoing, there is a crucial opportunity for all Member States to improve their spatial planning processes accordingly and ensure speed with quality. 📌 Recommendations for Member States: 💬 Ensure early public participation in the spatial planning process with providing multiple accessible modes 🗺 Ensure data quality dtandards and use high-quality environmental sensitivity mapping tools 🤝 Enhance coordination between national, regional, and local spatial planning frameworks 🖇Address administrative and skills shortcomings and invest in digital systems 🏞 Prioritise artificial and dual land use areas ⚡ Invest in #grid capacity and consider proximity to grid when mapping RAAs 📅 Join our Webinar on Thursday 16th @12H00 to deep dive on the findings and hear from experts on this crucial matter.
