𝟑 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 After 12 years of working in the field of culture and inclusion and having to ‘practice what I preach’ every single day, here are some of my biggest take-aways: 👉 Culture will catch you completely off-guard unless you are intentionally and proactively looking out for it. I have heard more stories than I would have liked to, about businesses failing, people being excluded and jobs being lost due to a lack of understanding how culture played a key role. I hope we can consider culture as a critical factor earlier on in our interactions rather than an after-thought, to avoid these pitfalls. 👉 This work is not easy and surprisingly needs you to do a lot of inner work. Interestingly, when trying to work across cultures, we tend to focus on ‘them’ and how ‘they are getting it all wrong.’ This is natural. However, when you realise that you have the capacity for respect, empathy and a huge opportunity to broaden your mind and expand your skills, working across cultures becomes such a joyful experience. 👉 The problems we face in today’s world and businesses can be overcome by harnessing the collective wisdom, experience and perspectives that cultural diversity brings. Breaking down and transcending cultural barriers and biases, is how we unlock our future. I have been fortunate to experience the impact of Aperian's reach and scale across the globe through the success and innovation of the clients we support. What have your biggest lessons been? 🌐 Happy World Day for Cultural Diversity, all! 🌐 Image description: To the right of the image, there are three shapes - a square, a circle and a triangle with the text “There is only one way to look at things…” that appears at the top. To the left of the image, four overlapping squares, four overlapping circles and four overlapping triangles are seen, with the text indicating the sentence being competed “...until someone shows us how to look at them with different eyes.” The footnote has the source Pablo Picasso, Spanish painter and sculptor along with Aperian’s logo.

Global VP of Impact at Steelcase I Best-Selling Author of You Belong Here | Speaker on Belonging + Purpose
I started working Steelcase almost a decade ago, helping launch our Learning and Innovation Center in Munich, Germany. My goal at the time was to learn how to build cultures of Belonging. The more I discovered about building a learning organization, the more I was able to help our clients and global organizations throughout the world to incorporate these insights in their own workplaces. I knew that we can understand the need to create work cultures focused on Belonging — but what about the communities in which we live and work? How do those two cultures interconnect and what would be possible if we thought of them as a single system instead of separate? After the launch of the Learning and Innovation Center, my role expanded to lead Social Innovation and then ESG where I was able to explore that question deeper with employees, clients and community partners throughout the world. This focus on designing cultures of Belonging where we live and work where everyone feels seen, heard and valued has become my forever work. It’s led to me speaking to tens of thousands of people in over 20+ countries, as well as authoring my first book ‘You Belong Here: The Power of Being Seen, Heard, and Valued on Your Own Terms.’ When you align with a greater purpose with passionate curiosity, you discover how to truly belong to yourself. I’m beyond grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way these last ten years and I can’t wait to see how we’re going to change the world together in the years to come. Supporting CEO's and Leadership teams to build successful inclusive businesses I Podcast Host - A Dog Called Diversity I
We recently bought a house and some parts need renovating. The place is 24 years old with the original kitchen and bathrooms. As you can imagine they need some attention and updating 🙄 No different to the organisations we work in really. We need to continuously improve and update with the times. If we were still doing things the same way we were 24 years ago there would be many organisations out of business. When it come to organisational culture, 24 years ago we were talking about culture fit. This basically meant finding people who were just like the people who already worked for that business. Now we talk about creating cultures of inclusion and belonging. We talk about finding people who are a culture add. But how do we create these cultures? A culture where everyone is similar is much easier to build than creating places where people with diverse backgrounds and experiences feel like they belong. So how do we build an inclusive culture? What are the foundations and the building blocks needed? How do we swap out parts when they are tired and don't work like they used to? I'm running a masterclass next week on the building blocks to an inclusive culture. Here's your invitation to come along https://lnkd.in/gJ3B_VrG It's free and will help you think about culture change, and how culture change takes time. Just like getting your kitchen renovated!

❗ Is culture really getting more recognition than ever? And if so, what does that actually mean in practice? This UNESCO’s report on culture and sustainable development reveals that: 🔸 Culture’s transformative impact has gained prominence, as demonstrated by United Nations resolutions on culture and sustainable development. 🔸 Member States in all regions have shown an increased commitment to harnessing culture for sustainable development, which is reflected in the greater inclusion of culture in national and local voluntary reviews and sustainable development strategies. 🔸 Significant policy developments have been reported, particularly concerning artistic freedom and the socioeconomic rights of culture professionals: new legislation on working conditions, fairness codes, and fair pay grants, as well as the establishment of national registries of culture workers. 🔸 The global dialogue on the return and restitution of cultural property to countries of origin is gaining momentum. 🔸 Culture is increasingly integrated into education systems, practices, and pedagogies. 🔸 Culture is more prevalent in cross-sectoral cooperation across policy areas such as economy, trade, labor, education, innovation, digital technology, and tourism. 🔸 The connection between culture and climate action is being increasingly addressed in international and regional forums and policy frameworks. One of the conclusions of the report is: “The time has come to integrate culture as a specific objective in the international development agenda.” It remains to be seen whether culture will be included on the agenda of the Summit of the Future next year, but this mapping of recent developments regarding the recognition of culture can be useful for those advocating for it. Driving Impact Through Strategic Corporate Communications | Strategic Leader in Corporate Communications, Brand Management, Public Affairs, Sustainability
⬆ Bridging the Gap What a match: The view from the hotel when we discussed the existing company #values and the ones that were evolving. Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. 🌍We were keen on getting alignment and direction amidst a global #rebranding we had initiated. Each business segment presented a unique perspective, prompting us to seek harmony in our approach. We were working on an alignment. The values should follow an acronym. And this is when we started our discussion that day. 💡The pivotal question arose: do our values truly resonate? Can we effectively convey them with consistency, transparency, and a focus on fostering employee comprehension and clarity? Are they contributing to our emerging corporate culture? As communicators, we instantly reflected and evaluated the values and their communicative potential. And we gave feedback. Reflecting on the process made me think of our role. 🚀 It is a joint approach. In my opinion, communication is bridging the gap between the business and its #stakeholders – enabling business success. What do you think? Please share your thoughts! James Kenny Bowei Li #StrategicCommunication #ValuesAlignment #BusinessSuccess

Be yourself, design your cuture. The first step in getting the culture you want is knowing what you want. It sounds obvious and it is; it sounds easy, but it's not. With seemingly infinite possibilities to choose from, how do you design a culture that gives your organization the advantages it needs, creates an environment you are proud of, and that- most importantly- can actually be implemented? 📍 Wheter your company is a startup or a hundred years old, designing your culture is always relevant. Cultures, like the organizations that create them, must evolve to meet new challenges. 📍 All cultures are aspirational. None of the companies ever achieved total cultural compliance or harmony. The point is not to be perfect, just better than you were yesterday. 📍 While you can draw inspiration from other cultures, don't try to adapt another organization's way. For your culture to be vibrant and sustainable, it must come from the blood, from the soul. 📍 Designing a successful culture is to be yourself. #benhorowitz
