The company's president Mike Cavanagh said “Our expectation is that soon an 11 year rights deal between ourselves and the NBA will be announced. In the middle of Super Bowl week with key broadcasters rolling out earnings later this week, a new Sports Streaming Platform was announced that will consolidate ESPN+, Hulu, and HBO Max which ultimately consolidates ESPN, FOX Sports, and Warner Bros. Discovery. This platform will have access to National Football League (NFL), UFL, National Basketball Association (NBA), WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Hockey League (NHL), PGA TOUR, College basketball, National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)... basically everything you can think of except The Premier League. This is the ultimate sports streaming package. This is groundbreaking and potentially game changing. This is a great case study and discussion for students to dig into. Sports Business Classes - - this is quite a significant move. There has been a lot of discussion about Live Sports x Streaming. The NFL is setting records. The NBA media deal negotiations are a fascinating insight into what the leagues are looking for in a media deal as the world continually gets more digital. Linear television and who can get the most people no longer appear to be the primary focus of these deals, especially the NBA. This article lays out why Comcast is such an important and interesting player in this battle for the final spot. Instead, the focus is now on collecting as much data on the consumer as possible. That is what streaming services provide. The NFL got tons of data from the TNF deal and will continue getting data from the wild card game on Peacock. This data is worth more than a normal person may think on the business level. Amazon and ESPN/Disney already appear to have deals in place for the next NBA media deal, so it is between WB Discovery/TNT and Comcast/NBC/Peacock. TNT is the traditional broadcaster who, while having the streaming service, does not have the financial power or the data-gathering of Comcast/NBC/Peacock. The latter, meanwhile, has a greater ability to collect data, has more money and is much more stable in terms of ownership. The results of this WB Discovery vs Comcast war will showcase where the future of sports broadcasting is heading. Keep your eyes out for what happens.

Netflix x WWE deal is the talk of the industry. I wrote a lot about sports rights going global in the wake of the MLS/Apple deal. We're seeing the most obvious ones first but I do think there is even bigger potential on the less obvious properties and we might see more and more surprising move in the upcoming months. A few thoughts on the keys to success on such a global endeavor. ✅ Long term planning The NBA is rumored to have an opt out clause in all its international contracts in case a global deal can be struck in the next big domestic rights negociation. They planned for a potential global deal years in advance. That's a really a smart move. Now you can feel for the international partners having to accept that kind of clause but then again they had to accept the D2C offerings long ago, so nothing really new here. ✅ Carving out non exclusive free to air rights As much as having a global partner can be game changing it's also important to target more specific local markets and keep some free to air exposure in most cases. I'm a big believer in the fact that exclusivity is not the ultimate premium it once was and I think in this market you can struck a global behind a paywall deal while offering local packages here and there on free to air on a non exclusive basis. It makes sense on every side and that's basically the F1 playbook as well. ✅ Becoming a media, content and production house As I wrote in the middle of the COVID pandemic, Host broadcasting and production companies have great days ahead as we are going to see many more production duties being handled directly by the rights owners and not by the broadcasters anymore, again the F1 playbook. While it's important to have proper partners and hard to do everything internally there is really no way around having a proper dedicated internal team with deep expertise in production, content and media to help with long term vision, strategy and most importantly storytelling. You cannot just rely on outside partners and need a lot of in house expertise as well. In fact, you can make a case for bringing more and more expertise internally in some instances. ✅ Becoming global doesn't mean forgetting local I'm also big on localization which might seem contradictory to such a move to global but off platform content, through social media but also through selected partners and more importantly using athletes channels can allow a sport property to keep in touch with each market with a local flavor.
